“‘Cyclone’ is about the 2006 Cyclone Monica and the sacred Djómi spirits who saved Maningrida that night,” Rachel Thomas—singer and songwriter in Ripple Effect Band—tells Apple Music. “The song unites people in Maningrida because we all went through the cyclone together, and the Djómi spirits who saved us are always with us, close to our hearts, wherever we go.” The nine-piece all-female Arnhem Land band sings about culture, Country, and history across its members’ respective languages, including Ndjébbana, Burarra, Na-kara, and Kune. “Cyclone” features on their 2024 album, Mayawa (which translates to “down the beach”). Now, Stereogamous—producer/DJ Paul Mac—has remixed the track, transforming the rich, bluesy song with pulsating dance-floor beats.
