JJ Heller pens folk-pop that wraps her personal relationship with Christ in an appeal that is universal. On an album like 2010's When I'm With You (which along with several other titles climbed both the Christian and secular folk charts), the singer/songwriter addresses the kind of life struggles that affect not just believers but all of us. What's more, she uses melodies, guitars, and pianos honeyed enough to appear in a Patty Griffin or Jewel song. These qualities also shine through on the Californian's covers. You have to marvel at the way she draws a soothing and deeply spiritual warmth from the '70s classic “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
