MC5's psych punk owes a great deal to the Stones, The Animals, and the other British Invasion bands that ripped fuzzy R&B rave-ups full of bad attitude. But the Detroiters also loved soul music and far-out jazz: James Brown's pleading “I'll Go Crazy” taught them how to whip a crowd into a frenzy with ecstatic swing, and the cosmic bebop radiating from Sun Ra's “Dancing in the Sun” offers a template for their own fiery brand of improvisation.
