Missy Higgins: Visionary Women
Since first rising to fame in the early 2000s, Melbourne singer-songwriter Missy Higgins has been a household name in Australian music. Across her five albums (the most recent being 2018’s Solastalgia) you can hear a distinct evolution through sounds and influences—many of which she’s sharing in this playlist. “Here is just a little sample of a few of the female artists who have inspired me over the years, from when I was starting out songwriting in my teens to now as an established artist, always looking for inspiration,” Higgins tells Apple Music. Her eclectic picks include plenty of local artists, like Thelma Plum, Emma Louise, Sampa the Great, and Emily Wurramara, alongside big names like Nina Simone, Fiona Apple, and Billie Eilish. “There is a bravery and boldness to all these women,” she says. “Hearing them play inspires me to make bolder choices myself.”
