Romance and desire are wrought on a blockbuster scale in MUNA’s drama-packed pop songs. The Los Angeles trio of multi-instrumentalists Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, and Naomi McPherson mix billowing synths, precise guitar lines, and expansive programmed beats with personal lyrics about queerness delivered via Gavin’s emotional lead vocals. The 2022 anthem “What I Want,” from the act’s self-titled third album, presents an urgent wish list ranging from fireworks to entire galaxies, while “Silk Chiffon” taps guest (and label boss) Phoebe Bridgers. MUNA’s pulsing melodies have lent themselves naturally to remixes by Tycho and other producers, but the band doesn’t need any help to reach the cheap seats with their arena-sized choruses.
