Recife-based Chico Science & Nação Zumbi released their career-defining sophomore album Afrociberdelia in 1996 at the peak of the '90s mangue beat movement. A culturally fuelled musical mix founded by the late Science married rhythms of rap, rock, funk, hip-hop and electronic with a sonic assault of Pernambuco's rapid-fire regional percussion (known as maracatu)—with the movement setting the stage for a Brazilian rock resurgence. Carrying on as simply Nação Zumbi, the band released their sixth album in 2014.
