Kevin Barnes founded Of Montreal in the ‘90s, with a sound based around the big hooks that fueled ‘60s bands like The Kinks. Dousing familiar melodies with a dizzying array of influences that take in disco beats and funk riffs, the band went on to become full-on experimentalists with 2004's Satanic Panic in the Attic, twisting their pop songs into surreal soundscapes. Even when Barnes got personal on 2015's Aureate Gloom, the group's sound continued to expand with nods to the styles of the punk scene.
