Cantopop legend Priscilla Chan wows listeners with lofty vocals that can soar above the elegant music itself. She broke through in the early '80s with sweet midtempo pop songs featuring the plucks of a traditional Chinese guzheng. She then expanded her sound to include guitar strums and horn blurts, sometimes creating sparse and upbeat numbers (“Lonely”) and at other times reaching for something more surging (“Flower Shop”). Throughout, Chan's singing consistently dazzles, often rising above the melodies to hit high notes on the crest of a big, piano-backed chorus.
