It’s no wonder that in 2023, Munich’s Public Possession encompasses a label, a DJ collective, an audio consultancy, and a record shop. It was started to gather co-founders Valentino Betz and Marvin Schuhmann’s varied interests across music, art, graphic design, parties, and other avenues of expression. The two principals have DJed together since 2007 (formerly as Marvin & Valentino); with the help of Beni Brachtel (aka Bartellow), Betz and Schuhmann made slow-motion, house- and disco-adjacent electronic music as Tambien, the name on the imprint’s earliest releases. But over the last decade since the broader Public Possession platform was created, they’ve helped to stretch the boundaries of what a tastemaking electronic music label can be, putting out lo-fi, hypnogogic pop; ambient that borders on New Age; house and techno that's cut with disco and New Wave; and all sorts of experimental forms. You can hear that range in their recent compilation On & On and in their picks for Selects—the playlist in which the world’s best DJs and producers share their favorite tracks of any given moment. “This playlist is a loose collection of songs that are dear to us,” Betz tells Apple Music. “It includes new and old music. Music by friends and idols. Also some music released on our label. It is by no means complete. It‘s an open thread, a starting point, and an invitation to dig deeper. It could’ve sounded completely different; it reflects the mood that we were in the day it was made.” Hear all their Selects, and add any favorites to your library.
