Leaving the mod R&B of The Spencer Davis Group behind, Steve Winwood joined Dave Mason, Chris Wood, and Jim Capaldi in a forward-looking new psychedelic project, Traffic. Catchy singles like "Paper Sun" and "Hole in My Shoe" hit the UK charts, but the albums Mr. Fantasy and Traffic found Mason's pop instincts at odds with the others' progressive leanings. After Mason's departure, Traffic reformed for 1970's folky John Barleycorn Must Die. Later albums like The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys moved into a mellow jazz-rock direction before Traffic split in 1974.
