Last week, we took part in the symposium entitled ‘Navigating International Sanctions Regimes for Maldives Public and Private Sector Stakeholders’, conducted by Moody's. The focus of this symposium was the nature and the legal framework of international sanctions regime, and how it has developed over the years. Discussions also highlighted the emerging trends in sanction evasion and how financial institutions can address those issues. Special thanks to Moody’s, U.S. Department of State and CRDF Global for making this symposium possible. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet our colleagues in the financial sector and discuss the emerging trends in sanctions evasion from a Maldivian perspective.

Pleased to have taken part in Thailand ADR Week 2024 last week, where we engaged with leading practitioners and arbitrators from across the region. It was a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with old friends and forge new relationships. A heartfelt thank you to all who attended and contributed to the discussions! We are pleased to note that our Managing Partner, Ahmed Muizzu has been appointed as a member of the normalisation committee set up by FIFA to regularise the affairs of Football Association of Maldives (FAM). The committee was set up by FIFA following consultations with the AFC and in order to address the dire governance and financial crisis faced by the FAM. The committee’s term has been fixed until 31 July 2025. The primary mandate of the committee is to work with financial experts to trace misappropriated funds of FAM, and work towards recovering those funds. The 5 member committee is headed by former Minister of Youth and Sports, Ahmed Zuhoor, and consists of professionals with background in law and finance. Ahmed Muizzu was the first Prosecutor General of the Maldives, and has been instrumental in the development of criminal justice system in Maldives.
