The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme has organized the Field Research Assistants’ (FRA) Day. FRA's Day serves as a platform for FRAs to meet, share experiences, and exchange ideas related to their roles. This year's event will be held under the theme: "Bringing Knowledge to Light: Celebrating FRAs' Excellence in Health Research.

MLW’s Bacterial and Drug-Resistant Infections Research Group, in collaboration with the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH)’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee, organized a "Big Walk" as part of the awareness activities on antimicrobial resistance this week. The walk started from Blantyre Magistrate Court, all the way to QECH via the Masauko Chipembere Highway. Throughout the walk, participants took time to engage with the public by providing information on AMR, prevention of spread of drug-resistant infections, dangers of self-medication and misuse of antibiotics in farming, amongst other issues surrounding AMR. The walk was part of a broader series of activities designed by MLW and QECH to increase awareness on AMR, in alignment with global efforts to combat this critical issue. #Waar #educate #AMRAwareness #advocate #ActNow

Malawi is one of three countries which will soon be launching a project to investigate the relationship between antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antibiotic prescribing practices, and with antibiotic use practices in local communities, as well as identifying antibiotics with less likelihood of resistance. Alongside healthcare professionals and Ministries of Health in Uganda, Malawi and Zambia, researchers from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ), Makerere University in Uganda, Doctors with Africa (CUAMM) and the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Programme (MLW) will aim to create new strategies to optimise antibiotic use and reduce AMR. Researchers will test a new AMR surveillance system to monitor resistance to antibiotics used to treat such cases, sampling under-five children, across a range of healthcare facilities to determine the prevalence and severity of AMR. Malawi has become the fifth country to launch Phase 3 clinical trial sites for the M72/AS01E tuberculosis vaccine candidate. Screening for participants began at a site in Blantyre, with a second trial site also planned. If proven safe and effective, M72/AS01E could potentially be the first vaccine to help prevent pulmonary TB in adolescents and adults—the most prevalent form of tuberculosis. The Phase 3 clinical trial began in March 2024 at sites in South Africa to evaluate the vaccine's safety and efficacy, and will eventually enroll up to 20,000 participants across all trial sites. Todays marks the beginning of World AMR Awareness Week (WAAR) which is commemorated from 18 - 24 November every year. AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial medicines. And continuous use over time causes the body to adapt and to cease to respond to the treatments, causing the infections to become difficult or impossible to treat, thereby risking the disease to spread, severe illness, disability and death. This year's theme is 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞. 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞. 𝐀𝐜𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰. Using antimicrobials only when necessary is our best defense against a world health crisis! #WAAR #AMRAwareness #Educate #Advocate #ActNow
