About us
The Tea Association of Malawi Limited (TAML) has been a significant player in the tea industry since its establishment in 1934. TAML was initially incorporated as Nyasaland Tea Association on 10th January 1936 and later renamed Tea Association (Central Africa) Limited. The Association is the representative body of all tea producers, (including smallholder tea producers) in Malawi with a mandate of promoting the sustainability of Malawi tea. The Tea Association of Malawi, advocates for a favorable operating environment for the tea industry in Malawi, and promotes the Malawi tea industry globally. The Association maintains close ties with the Tea & Coffee Merchants Association of Malawi (TCMA), Tea brokers in managing the Limbe Tea Auction where tea is sold locally. TAML is affiliated several international organisations, including: United Kingdom Tea Council; Canada Tea Association; Malawi Confederation of Chamber, Commerce and Industry (MCCI); Employer Consultative Association of Malawi (ECAM); FAO - Intergovernmental Group on Tea (IGG); Tea Association of USA and is recognized by the International Labour Organization. The Association is governed by a nine members Board of Directors and board sub-committees which provide policy guidance. The Association is funded by its members through a Cess levied on tea production as provided by the Tea Cess (Imposition of Cess) Act. The Cess also funds research at the Tea Research Foundation of Central Africa (TRFCA), which reflects the importance placed on research on tea by the association and its members. TAML is committed to increasing awareness of the tea industry in Malawi, both locally and internationally.

Boosting Occupational Health and Safety Standards in the Tea industry!!! We recently had the privilege of visiting Illovo in Nchalo, where we gained valuable insights into their Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) systems. This learning visit was a huge success, and we're excited to apply the knowledge gained to enhance our own safety standards and protocols. A big thank you to Illovo for hosting us and sharing their expertise. At Tea Association of Malawi, we prioritize the safety and well-being of our workers, and we're always looking for ways to improve. #OccupationalHealthAndSafety #LearningVisit #teaindustry #TAML #Illovo #WorkersSafety #Continuousimprovement

Today marks the end of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence on International Human Rights Day, but our commitment to creating a safer and more equitable workplace remains unwavering. Over the past 16 days, TAML, in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Social Welfare, and Community Development, and Solidaridad, conducted massive awareness campaigns across all estates, reaching over 3,450 workers (1,980 women, 1,470 men) and 120 smallholder farmers (51 women, 69 men). Our efforts aimed to promote our revised industry gender policy and estates grievance mechanism, empowering workers to report incidents and fostering a safer work environment. We're proud of the progress made and grateful for the support of our partners. Our work doesn't stop here - we'll continue to strive for zero tolerance for workplace violence and harassment. Thank you Solidaridad Southern Africa!!! #16DaysOfActivism #InternationalHumanRightsDay #ZeroTolerance #WorkplaceSafety #Solidaridad #MinistryofGender

Following the launch of our Gender Equality, Anti-Harassment, and Non-Discrimination Policy in May, 2024, we embarked on a series of orientation trainings to ensure its effective implementation. In June, July, and September,2024, we conducted comprehensive training sessions for estate management, gender committees, women's welfare committees, and general workers from four tea estates and the Tea Research Foundation. These trainings resulted in the development of actionable plans, equipping participants with extensive knowledge of the policy content. We anticipate tangible outcomes from these efforts. To date, we have successfully oriented 498 individuals, comprising 223 females (45%) and 275 males (55%), representing a significant milestone in promoting gender equality and awareness. The orientations were conducted in partnership with the Malawi Ministry of Gender, Social Welfare, and Community Development and Solidaridad Southern Africa Plans are underway to: 1. Orient the remaining five estates, including smallholder tea growers' associations. 2. Conduct a massive awareness campaign on the policy for all workers during the upcoming 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (November 25 - December 10). This awareness campaign aims to further amplify the policy's message, encourage reporting of incidents, and promote a culture of respect and inclusivity across all estates. TAML will continue monitoring the estates to ensure efficient and effective implementation of the Gender Equality, Anti-Harassment, and Non-Discrimination Policy. #safeworkplaces #genderequality #inclusivity ##humanrights #TeaIndustry #TaML

The Tea Association of Malawi (TAML) held a partners' engagement conference in Salima on October 24-25, 2024. This year's theme, ''Collaborating for a Sustainable Tea Industry: Integrating Gender Equality, Environmental Stewardship, and Child Labour Prevention' 'emphasized a holistic approach to sustain the industry. Malawi's tea industry employs over 60,000 workers, with women comprising 35% (21,000) of the workforce. Additionally, the industry supports 23,000 smallholder farmers, of whom 65% (14,950) are women. This demographic breakdown underscores the industry's significant impact on women's livelihoods and emphasizes the importance of gender equality initiatives. TAML recognizes its vital role in protecting workers from workplace violence and harassment, including promoting gender equality. As Malawi faces climate change aftermaths, environmental stewardship is key to the industry's success. The conference brought together stakeholders, including tea estates, smallholder farmers' associations, partners, and the government. Honorable Jean Sendeza, Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, graced the occasion as the guest of honor. In her keynote speech, she commended TAML for organizing the conference and praised the association's gender policy. She emphasized the importance of effective implementation, ensuring that policy commitments translate into tangible outcomes. The conference also featured a presentation by the Better Than Cash Alliance, highlighting the importance of financial inclusion through digital payment solutions in the tea industry. This initiative aims to transition away from traditional payment methods, embracing technology for improved efficiency and transparency. By digitalizing payments, the industry seeks to enhance financial security and accessibility for workers. The conference concluded with key recommendations and a comprehensive roadmap for sustainability in the three focus areas. With this, the tea industry is now well-prepared for 2025, equipped with a clear plan and prioritized objectives. The conference successfully charted a course for the industry's progress in 2025, aligning with TAML's commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. TAML would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Better Than Cash Alliance ,Solidaridad Southern Africa ,TrustAfrica , @TNM MPAMBA, One Nico and Ethical Tea Partnership for their invaluable support. Your contributions were instrumental in making this conference a success. We couldn't have done it without you. Thank you. #socialresponsibility #suistanability #Financialinclusion ##genderequality ##TeaIndustry #Malawi
