Cintya Martínez Maldonado, Country Manager for Mexico at the International Air Transport Association (IATA), highlighted the low representation of women in pilot roles within the aviation industry. This is linked to a long-standing cultural perception that women were not suited for technical careers like piloting. The IATA's "25by2025" initiative aims for at least 25% female representation in the industry by the end of 2025, with pilot roles still lagging behind. Currently, the global average of female pilots stands at 6%. Efforts to increase women's representation in leadership roles are also progressing. Martínez Maldonado emphasizes that cultural change is slow but essential for progress and that the initiative is just the beginning of a long-term effort. #iata #internationalwomensday #womenpilot #aviationnews

The White House announced that U.S. President Donald Trump has decided to delay the imposition of new tariffs on car imports from Canada and Mexico for one month. Trump is open to hearing more about potential additional tariff exemptions. The move follows discussions with automakers such as Stellantis, Ford, and General Motors. While Trump acknowledges progress from Ottawa in reducing fentanyl trafficking, he believes it's not enough to justify reducing tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods. These tariffs, which could affect U.S. auto production, are still set to go into effect on April 2, 2025, but the exemption gives manufacturers a 30-day reprieve. The delay is connected to discussions about the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and whether carmakers comply with the rules of origin under this agreement. In exchange for the tariff exemption, automakers would likely need to show plans for more investment in U.S. production. The delay aligns with earlier conversations where Trump met with car industry executives to explore the possibility of a 30-day delay. Following the discovery of irregularities by the Federal Superior Auditor (ASF) in key projects of Andrés Manuel López Obrador's administration, including the Tulum International Airport and the Suburban Train to AIFA, the need for transparency in public works has become crucial. The ASF found unresolved issues, such as unexplained expenses in the Tulum airport and overpayments for the Suburban Train. Juan Carlos Machorro, a legal expert, highlighted that the ASF's role is to audit public resources and ensure thorough investigations into any discrepancies. He also criticized the involvement of the Armed Forces in handling public works, as it limits transparency due to the special procurement regime applied to security and disaster-related projects. Machorro further pointed out that transparency issues have been compounded by the centralization of information access within the federal government, weakening independent oversight bodies. He believes that without proper checks and balances, it's unlikely that the administration will self-evaluate or self-sanction. #tulumairport #amlo #trensuburbano #asf #aifa

Mexico and the U.S. began exchanging databases related to tariff negotiations, aiming to prevent tariffs on Mexican goods, according to Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Economy. Ebrard met with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick in Washington, where they discussed the importance of trade between the two countries, the structure of their exchanges, and key concerns from the U.S. administration. The two sides are working together on complex data exchanges to understand their current trade status. Ebrard emphasized the need for cooperation, noting that Mexico and the U.S. are the most integrated economies globally, unlike other trade relationships. He explained that over 40% of the vehicles Mexico exports are made with U.S. products, and 65 cents of every dollar Mexico exports to the U.S. is spent on U.S. imports. The meetings and exchanges will continue throughout the week, as both governments aim to resolve concerns over narcotics, migration, and national security, which have led to the potential 25% tariff threat from President Trump. https://lnkd.in/g7XGeT_Q #tariffs #trump #import #ebrad #economy

Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s president, stated that CIA drone flights over Mexico are legal, as they are part of long-standing security cooperation between Mexico and the U.S. She explained that these operations are conducted at Mexico's request to address security issues, not illegal activities. She dismissed reports from CNN and The New York Times about the use of drones for counterterrorism and to detect illegal fentanyl labs. Sheinbaum also criticized opposition parties for using the issue to weaken her government, reaffirming that Mexico’s sovereignty is non-negotiable. Expert Opinion: Avoiding Conflict with the U.S. Drone expert Luis Salazar Brehm noted that Mexico’s response has been cautious, focusing on defending sovereignty while avoiding open confrontation with the U.S. to maintain important security cooperation. #dronescia #cia #sheinbaum #drones #newyorktimes #cnn

Mexico is now the world’s second-largest private aviation market, with nearly 2,000 aircraft, thanks to its strategic location and rising demand. According to Alea Digital Group’s report "The Future of Private Aviation in Mexico: Challenges and Opportunities Towards 2025," growth will depend on technology, accessibility, and regulations. Since 2019, private aviation has grown by 25%, driven by the pandemic and the need for safer, more flexible travel. Major events like the Super Bowl and Formula 1 further boost demand. To increase accessibility, options like shared flights and Jet Cards allow passengers to book private travel without owning a jet, with prices ranging from $500 to $3,000 per seat. Private aviation offers unmatched convenience, with flights available on short notice and minimal airport wait times. Demand peaks in winter for holiday and ski travel, and again in summer and September for major events. Sustainability will be key to the sector’s continued growth through 2025. Mexico's aerospace industry is hindered by bureaucratic issues and the lack of a legal framework to attract investments, including from SpaceX. Despite its strategic location, the country has not capitalized on opportunities for space activities due to these regulatory gaps. In 2022, experts proposed a constitutional reform to prioritize the space sector and create necessary regulations, but it has stalled in the Senate. The reform is vital for President Claudia Sheinbaum's plan to boost Mexico's space industry, including satellite production and technology development. Currently, Mexico serves as a manufacturer for foreign companies like SpaceX, but the country lacks its own technological development. The reform would provide the legal tools to foster foreign investment and promote domestic growth. Additionally, the sector has faced a brain drain, as Mexican talent moves abroad for better opportunities. The space industry is seen as a key area for economic growth, with applications for climate change solutions like water conservation and agriculture. The reform is expected to be discussed in the Senate soon, with hopes it will pass under Sheinbaum's leadership. Source: https://lnkd.in/gnJXTRNh #aerospace #mexicoaerospace #spacex #sheinbaum

Donald Trump, in his second term, continues to use his characteristic "Trump method" of negotiation, based on the threat of severe measures like tariffs, to gain concessions from other countries. After threatening to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican and Canadian products, Trump agreed to a 30-day pause with Mexico and Canada in exchange for commitments to reduce undocumented migration and fentanyl trafficking. This negotiation style relies on creating uncertainty and pressure, adopting extreme positions to later negotiate down. During his first term, Trump used this approach with Mexico, securing promises about migrant control, and now he repeats the strategy. However, this method is not without criticism, as many argue that the concessions Trump achieves are superficial and do not address underlying issues. Experts say the key to dealing with Trump is staying calm and negotiating diplomatically without yielding to aggressive rhetoric. Despite his theatrical style, Trump always seeks to portray himself as the "winner," controlling the media narrative in his favor.
