Wouldn’t it be great if you could get your Malay-speaking grandma to tell you tales about Singapore in English? Well, that’s what we did. In celebration of SG60, we used AI to help families bridge intergenerational communication gaps through storytelling. We created a film that features 14 talents, comprising Singtel employees and their family members, who tell a folktale about Pulau Ubin. The story was narrated in the native languages of seven of the participants featured, including English, Chinese, Malay, Tamil, Teochew, Hokkien and Malayam languages, reflecting Singapore’s diverse mother tongue languages and dialects. These were then translated into another language using AI. The film utilises AI-powered voice-generation, lip-syncing and generative art technology to enable authentic multilingual storytelling, showcasing the power of AI in transcending language barriers. With AI, expressions and voice samples were captured during filming and used to create animated facial movements and overlaid voices. It was also used to generate images to bring the story to life. Developed in partnership with Hogarth and School of Film & Media Studies, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, this initiative is part of Singtel’s ongoing collaboration with educational institutions to leverage AI to foster innovation, enhance experiences and drive learning.
