💌 Haven’t subscribed to our newsletter yet? No worries! Here’s a quick TL;DR of last month's issue for you. Games: A Secret Weapon for a Happier Life Did you know that games can literally add years to your life? 🚀 Jane McGonigal’s game SuperBetter has helped over a million people tackle real-life challenges like depression, chronic pain, and even stroke recovery. Her approach is built around four kinds of resilience: physical, mental, emotional, and social—and, believe it or not, this could help you live a longer, happier life! At [Not] Bored Games, we believe in the power of play, too. Take Frango Morango—our quirky, wacky crop negotiation game. Beneath the fun, it’s a social-emotional learning tool, helping people master negotiations through emotional intelligence. Games like these inspire us to think: What other life-changing possibilities could be hiding in a game box? Also, have you heard? LEGO and Asmodee teamed up to create Monkey Palace 🐒, a jungle-themed strategy game blending cooperation and competition as you build (and compete!) to create a LEGO masterpiece. PS: We went to SPIEL Essen 2024! You'll hear all about our trip in our next issue. 🎲🧠 Ready to play? Join the fun, and don’t miss out next time. Sign up so you can get the full scoop! 👇 🎲

Ever feel like traditional education is the world's longest tutorial level—with no skip button? Memorize this, regurgitate that, and somewhere along the way, we forget why we started playing in the first place. But here's a plot twist: emotions are the real game-changers in learning. When we're curious, excited, or even laughing at our own epic fails, that's when knowledge truly sticks. Studies show emotional engagement isn't just a bonus level; it's the main quest for meaningful learning. That's where we come in. At [Not] Bored Games, we're smashing the walls between "education" and "fun" like a pixelated hero with a power-up. Games naturally pull at our heartstrings (and sometimes our funny bones), making learning an adventure rather than a chore. So why keep playing by outdated rules? Let's roll the dice, move the pieces, and create a learning experience where boredom is the only thing off the table. Who's ready to join the rebellion?

We couldn't agree more! Jane McGonigal insights into the power of play continue to inspire us. At [Not] Bored Games, we’re on a mission to turn playful moments into opportunities for growth, just like she does with SuperBetter. Let’s keep finding new ways to play, learn, and grow. What’s your favorite way to boost resilience through play? Let us know in the comments! 👇
Remember that Jane McGonigal TED Conferences I posted a while ago? Well, I just came across another gem from her called "The Game That Can Give You 10 Extra Years of Life." This one’s even more mind-blowing than the last! After suffering a concussion, Jane created a game called SuperBetter to help in her recovery. But it didn’t just help her heal physically—it became a tool for building resilience in ways she never imagined. Jane breaks resilience down into four types: - Physical (moving more) - Mental (taking on small challenges) - Emotional (creating positive emotions) - Social (strengthening connections) According to research, regularly boosting these four types of resilience could add up to a decade to your life. But it’s not just about living longer—it’s about living better, with fewer regrets and more fulfillment. At [Not] Bored Games, we’ve always believed in the power of play, but Jane’s work took that idea to another level. Our first game, Frango Morango, embodies this. It’s a fun game about trading wacky crops, but underneath the surface, it’s a tool for SEL (Social and Emotional Learning), especially when it comes to navigating tricky negotiations. It helps build emotional and social resilience, just like Jane talks about. So here’s a fun challenge: How can you boost your resilience through play today? Whether it’s a quick board game, a puzzle, or just a playful conversation, it all counts toward a longer, happier life. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments! 👇 Let’s keep playing—for a happier and more resilient life! Check out her full talk.

Did you know gamers spend 3 BILLION hours a week playing? Imagine if we used those problem-solving skills for real-world challenges! At [Not] Bored Games, we're all about making play more meaningful. What global issue would YOU turn into a game?
I'm stuck on a level in Zelda: Breath of the Wild. After spending way too much time trying to beat it, I started feeling guilty—like maybe I was wasting my time. But then, I watched Jane McGonigal’s TED Conferences, and everything flipped. She said something that blew my mind: Gamers spend 3 billion hours a week playing online—but that’s not even close to what we need to solve the world’s biggest problems. Sounds crazy, right? But here’s the thing: games are teaching us some pretty amazing skills—like how to stay optimistic when things get tough, how to build strong social connections, how to collaborate, and how to find joy in hard work. What if we could take all those hours spent gaming and use them to tackle real-world challenges? That’s exactly what Jane and her team at the Institute for the Future are doing with games like World Without Oil (2007) or Evoke (2010). They’re using the power of play to spark solutions for issues like climate change and social innovation. That idea that games could do more than entertain is why we created [Not] Bored Games. Inspired by pioneers like Jane McGonigal, we’re crafting games that turn those hours into meaningful, real-world skills that could serve a bigger purpose. We're still in the early stages, but games' potential drives us. So, if you could turn any global problem into a game, what would it be? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Let’s play more—and maybe, just maybe, we’ll end up changing the world. Check out the full TED Talk on the link below:
