This week, Malaysian Michelle Shi Jie Chew was elected as Chair of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC Youth Commission during the 34th International Conference of the IFRC in Geneva. 🎉 Congratulations, Michelle! Michelle has already dedicated 12 remarkable years to volunteering with the Malaysian Red Crescent and has served for 5 years as the Asia-Pacific Representative for the IFRC Youth Commission – an inspiring testament to her commitment to humanitarian action at a young age. As the new Chair of the IFRC Youth Commission, Michelle has shared three impactful priorities: 1) Strengthening engagement with youth cohorts around the world to hear and empower the voices of the young from all backgrounds and environments. 2) Aligning the Youth Commission’s priorities with those of the IFRC to amplify collective impact through the power of co-creation. 3) Strengthening ties with youth volunteers worldwide to advocate effectively for issues that matter most to the young generation. We wish Michelle every success in her new role and look forward to witnessing the Youth Commission’s meaningful journey under her leadership.

In the context of pressing humanitarian challenges, Geneva hosted the 34th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. Representatives from 196 states and 191 Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies gathered to address urgent humanitarian needs in 120 conflicts worldwide and reaffirmed their shared commitment to international humanitarian principles. As the depositary of the Geneva Conventions, Switzerland is committed to advocating for stronger implementation of international humanitarian law to protect civilians and promote a future grounded in security, respect, and humanity. Malaysia was elected to chair this important gathering. Congratulations to Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz, the first woman to take on this challenge. Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz has long been dedicated to humanitarian engagement and international humanitarian law, including her work as Chairperson of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society.
