  • Last week, we had the pleasure of visiting Yayasan Waqf Malaysia (YWM), the national waqf entity that manages and develops waqf assets for the benefit of the Muslim community in Malaysia. Waqf is an Islamic endowment of property or assets for charitable or religious purposes, which resonates with our vision of creating a more inclusive and equitable society. We were impressed by the various waqf projects that YWM has initiated or supported, such as the Waqf Integrated Agriculture (WATANI), the Waqf Education Fund, and the Waqf Health Fund. These projects aim to improve the livelihoods and well-being of the waqf beneficiaries, as well as to contribute to the social and economic development of the country. We also discussed the potential of collaborating with YWM to leverage waqf as a catalyst for the development of the waqf economy in Malaysia and beyond. We believe that waqf is not only a noble act of charity, but also a powerful tool of transformation and innovation. By combining waqf with digital agriculture solutions, we can empower smallholder farmers, promote sustainable farming practices, and drive positive impact on the ASEAN food system. This is in line with our Kapitani 2024 plan, which is to become the leading digital agricultural ecosystem builder in ASEAN, with a focus on three major themes: empowering small-scale farmers with data-driven management solutions, promoting sustainable farming practices among our farmers, and providing access to finance to our farmers. We are excited to explore the possibilities of expanding our waqf-based initiatives to other ASEAN countries, where there is a huge demand and potential for the waqf economy. We look forward to working with YWM and other partners to make this vision a reality. #bertanibinanegara #waqfeconomy

  • We are here to build, we are here to grow Kapitani is a digital agricultural ecosystem builder that empowers smallholder farmers, promotes sustainable farming practices, and drives positive impact on the ASEAN food system. In 2024, we will focus on three major themes: - Empowering small-scale farmers with data-driven management solutions: We will provide our farmers with timely and relevant information on crop management, and market prices, using various digital channels such as mobile apps. We will also help them optimize their inputs, monitor their crops, and access timely information. - Promoting sustainable farming practices among our farmers: We will encourage our farmers to adopt sustainable farming practices that can enhance their soil health, conserve water, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and increase biodiversity. We will also support them with training, certification, and incentives to adopt Malaysian Good Agricultural Practice (myGAP) - Providing access to finance to our farmers: We will connect our farmers with lenders who can provide them with loans or inputs on credit, using through our platform. By focusing on these three themes, we aim to improve the livelihoods and well-being of our farmers and consumers, and contribute to food security and environmental sustainability in the ASEAN region. We are looking for partners, investors, and customers who share our vision and mission, and want to join us in our journey. • They are not fair to the farmers who work hard to grow these products, but receive a fraction of what they deserve. They are not fair to the consumers who are misled into believing that this is the true value of food. We shuld advocate more fair price that reflects the true value of food and the care that goes into producing it. A fair price that enables farmers to adopt more sustainable and humane practices that protect the whole ecosystem.

How is this ok? I saw this post on my feed today with a growing number of people congratulating and celebrating it, and I just think … how? How can it be possible to buy seed, prep land, plant, nurture, grow, harvest, grade, store, add packaging, pack, transport and retail any of those items for 15p? How can it be done for 35p, 48p, 78p or 95p? .. but 15p? The short answer is simple … it can’t. Someone somewhere is losing here. I don’t know for sure, but I’d have a good guess that it isn’t Tesco in the long run, and at a minimum the growers who have spent the best part of a year getting these crops to this point aren’t seeing anywhere near a fair enough return for their hard work or to sustain their livelihoods. It feels shocking to me that this is something we consider as a celebration. How can we expect consumers to truly value food when prices are crashed to these unsustainably low levels? They’re conditioned to think that this is the true cost and value of food production. That it’s ok and normal. It isn’t, and most of the time it’s the farmers that are left to foot the bill. There is an opportunity to change these behaviours - educate consumers, fairly pay farmers, and grow food in a more sustainable way. You just need to look to be part of that change and be better. EDIT: I had no idea this post would get so much attention. You may have heard about it already, but Riverford have a live campaign tackling this at the moment, called Get Fair About Farming, asking supermarkets to make their supply chains fairer. You can help out by signing and sharing our petition. It's due to be debated in parliament on Jan 22, and you can also write to your MP and urge them to be there. All info on the campaign and how you can help is at: getfairaboutfarming.co.uk #GetFairAboutFarming

  • We had a productive weekend with some of the key stakeholders of the agrofood sector in Malaysia, where we exchanged insights and ideas on how to accelerate the digital transformation of agriculture. One of the main challenges we identified was the low adoption rate of digital solutions among smallholder farmers, who make up the majority of the food producers in the country. To address this, we need to design and deliver incentives that can motivate and empower farmers to embrace digital platforms that can enhance their productivity, income, and market access. At Kapitani, we are committed to doing just that. Our mission is to create a positive impact on the agrofood sector in ASEAN, as well as contribute to the sustainable development goals of the United Nations. If you are interested in learning more about our work or collaborating with us, please feel free to reach out to me or visit our website. Thank you. 😊
