Streptococcus agalactiae Infection in Tilapia Fish 🐟 Streptococcus agalactiae is a bacterial pathogen that can cause significant disease in tilapia, especially in aquaculture systems. The infection, often referred to as streptococcosis, can result in high mortality rates and economic losses. Some of the typical symptoms observed in tilapia infected with Streptococcus agalactiae at our laboratory Lab-Ind Resource Sdn Bhd are: 1. Exophthalmia (Popeye): One of the most visible signs is the swelling or bulging of the eyes, often referred to as popeye. 2. Hemorrhages: Red patches or spots may appear on the skin, fins, and gills due to internal bleeding. These haemorrhages are often seen around the mouth, eyes, and fins. 3. Ascites (Fluid Accumulation): The abdominal cavity may swell due to the accumulation of fluid, leading to a bloated appearance. 4. Scale Loss and Skin Erosion: Scales may fall off, and the skin may start eroding, leading to exposed flesh in some severe cases. 5. Organ Damage: Necropsies often reveal damage to internal organs such as the liver, kidney, and spleen, which may appear swollen, discoloured, or necrotic. Implementing strict biosecurity practices, such as quarantining new fish and regular health monitoring, can help prevent the spread of the disease. Early detection and proper management are essential to minimizing the impact of Streptococcus agalactiae in tilapia farming.
