🤔Research Managers play a critically important role in advancing, validating, and promoting research… so how can Research Managers raise their profile? One answer is to work more closely with scholarly publishers: our missions align and overlap, and together we can engage the funder and library communities to create a more trusted research ecosystem. 💡 That is my reflection from supporting an event in Singapore yesterday. ARMS (the Australasian Research Management Society which has members in Singapore, New Zealand as well as Australia) has been celebrating its 25th Anniversary, and I had the pleasure of attending their recent conference in Darwin. It was an important step in my evolution as a Consultant. There I met Willie Koh, NTU’s Director of Research Integrity & Ethics, and he invited me to be on yesterday’s panel at the Singapore Chapter’s Professional Development Workshop as part of ARMS 25th Year Celebrations. 🌟After a terrific interactive workshop led by Edward Tan PhD, ARM(F) (from the Geriatric Education & Research Institute) when the audience helped identify the key soft skills necessary to develop one's career, our panel then deep dived into some of the issues, and shared career enhancing tips. With me on the panel were Dr (Anna) Hei CHAN, from NTU, and Dr Jonathan Pua from A*STAR’s Research Directorate; and Willie Koh expertly curated our comments and the audience’s questions. 👉 My main comment was to ensure you align career goals with your personal core purpose. Always care (including self-care) and be curious. Look for leadership skills in new recruits that demonstrate the ability to take responsibility for finding the potential in people and processes; and that they can also achieve SMART objectives… whilst having fun. Finally, we discussed the importance of networking and finding mentors in different domains. 🙏🏻 Thanks for the chance to share my experience from 40 years in publishing, which, on reflection, has continuously supported research managers, although only more recently explicitly. Something to work on as publishers seek to stay relevant, and research managers raise their profile. Research integrity is the common ground.
