RSPO's PalmGHG V5: Pioneering GHG Reporting in the Palm Oil Sector The RSPO’s PalmGHG Calculator is set to revolutionize GHG emission quantification in the palm oil industry with its upcoming V5 version. Aligned with international standards like ISO 14040, ISO 14044, and the GHG Protocol, this tool enables oil palm growers to monitor emissions across their production chain, covering Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. RSPO has announced a pilot testing period from December 9, 2024, to January 10, 2025, with feedback submission due by January 10, 2025 Key updates in PalmGHG V5 include: - Enhanced methodologies for Land Use Change (LUC) and Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME). - Integration with RSPO's Prisma platform for improved user experience. - Updated emission factors, default values, and a pilot testing phase (Dec 9, 2024 - Jan 10, 2025). For sustainability consultants, PalmGHG V5 signals a shift from basic GHG calculations to specialized roles in data analysis, strategy development, and emission reduction plans. New opportunities include training, data collection, and ensuring quality in GHG reporting. #GHGAccounting #PalmOil #RSPO #PalmGHG #SuSciCo https://lnkd.in/gtgZByub

Greening Supply Chains and Addressing Climate Risks: A Growing Priority Derived from the "Sustainability Trends Quarterly Outlook - October 2024" by the ERM Sustainability Institute. https://lnkd.in/gnZtzae2 The “Sustainability Trends Outlook” delivers critical insights for Malaysian companies, highlighting the importance of climate-related risk assessments and readiness for supply chain decarbonization. As regulations tighten and stakeholders demand transparency in emissions reporting and climate adaptation, these priorities are essential for businesses to remain competitive and compliant. Supply chain decarbonization has emerged as a critical focus, driven by impending deadlines under the Paris Agreement. Many corporations are intensifying their efforts, setting emissions reduction targets for suppliers, and investing in renewable technologies. Frameworks like the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) S1 and S2 are transforming climate risk management. These frameworks provide companies with a structured approach to disclose risks and opportunities associated with climate change. In Malaysia, the National Sustainability Reporting Framework (NSRF) aims to guide corporations in transitioning from TCFD to IFRS standards, ensuring alignment with global best practices. The report highlights that data centers are a major driver of global energy demand, with AI-related services significantly increasing emissions. By 2026, data center electricity consumption is expected to double, pushing companies to adopt clean energy solutions to mitigate their environmental impact. Additionally, stricter regulations are cracking down on misleading plastic sustainability claims, prompting innovation in packaging and recycling systems to address global plastic waste concerns. #scope3 #greenprocurements #ghgaccounting #riskmanagement

Breaking Ground on Plastic Waste Reduction 🌱 A recent study published in Science provides a transformative blueprint to address global plastic waste and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Combining cutting-edge research with actionable policy recommendations, it offers invaluable insights for sustainability advocates and communications leaders like Ronald Kayanja, who studied at the same university program I did and often shares impactful news—including this! Key Takeaways: 🔹 Technology-driven Pathways: - Recycling: Enhancing recycling processes to reduce the need for virgin plastic production. - Biomass Utilization: Developing plastics from renewable biomass sources to decrease reliance on fossil fuels. - Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU): Implementing technologies that capture carbon emissions during plastic production and repurpose them, thereby reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions. - Circular Carbon Pathway: Creating a closed-loop system where plastic waste is converted back into its original monomers or other valuable products, promoting a circular economy. 🔹 Policy Recommendations: - Plastic Production Caps: Implementing strict limits on plastic production to curb the influx of new plastics into the market. - Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): Mandating that manufacturers are accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products, including post-consumer waste management. - Global Recycling Standards: Establishing uniform recycling protocols to enhance efficiency and effectiveness across borders. - Public Awareness Campaigns: Launching comprehensive educational initiatives to inform consumers about the environmental impact of plastics and promote sustainable alternatives. 👉 Explore the full study here: https://lnkd.in/g5PsSDJ4 💡 Why This Matters: These strategies could reduce over 90% of plastic waste and dramatically curb emissions, helping organizations achieve ESG goals and drive meaningful impact. At SuSciCo - The Science of Sustainability Consulting, we’re committed to turning sustainability aspirations into tangible results. From GHG accounting and Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) assessments to ESG reporting and green supply chain consulting, our solutions are designed to empower organizations on their decarbonization journey. What do you think about these strategies? #Sustainability #PlasticWaste #CircularEconomy #ClimateAction #GHGAccounting #ESGReporting

  • Communicating the World Beyond 1.5 Degrees Celsius By Ts Raja Shazrin Shah Raja Ehsan Shah. In this article, I want to move beyond the usual data and science of climate change to explore the crucial role of communication in catalysing behavioural change in the direction of the urgent climate action required. As the planet's annual average temperature approaches the critical 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold—a point experts deem a precipice where the effects of global warming significantly worsen—there is an escalating concern among social scientists about humanity's unconscious progression into a hazardous era. The growing climate crises are seen as potential catalysts for heightened social unrest and increased polarisation, driven by nationalist sentiments. #planetaryhealth #planetaryboundaries #sustainability #ClimateAction #carbonfootprint #NetZero #ClimateEmergency #SDG #ESG #GHG #netzero https://wix.to/RauKRsn
