🌐 Last week we hosted our webinar “Digital Safety for Women and Girls: Preventing Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) & Cybercrime” 🌐    With the #16Days campaign underway to eliminate all forms of gender-based violence, this webinar featured several educational presentations & lively interactive discussions between our presenters, panellists & audience members to explore these important topics.    🔑 Key takeaways from the webinar  1. TFGBV amplifies existing gender inequalities, disproportionately affecting women, girls and LGBTQI, often through harassment, deepfakes, & misuse of AI-driven tools.  2. Deepfake technology poses severe threats to women, with 98% of deepfake videos online being pornographic. These are used for coercion, identity fraud & silencing survivors.  3. A shift is needed towards human-centered cybersecurity protecting individuals over devices, emphasizing safety, digital literacy, & oversight as fundamental components of online security.  4. Many national action plans lack sufficient measures to address TFGBV and cybersecurity issues, highlighting the need for more gender-sensitive policies.  5. Thank you for joining us last week at our side event at the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on the Beijing+30 Review! Our distinguished panel shared diverse examples of initiatives that are advancing gender equality in health from across the Asia-Pacific region. Key takeaways included: • Leadership by civil society organizations have played critical roles in advancing gender & health equity. There are multiple examples where grassroots organisations have supported transformation of legal frameworks to ensure inclusive health services, especially for women & people with disabilities. For example, Nepal’s legalization of abortion in 2002 was a turning point for women's health rights. Community-based initiatives & gender-sensitive policies significantly reduced maternal mortality and empowered women to access reproductive healthcare. • Shifting societal norms through education, engaging boys and men, & local legislation, such as recognizing unpaid care work, is crucial for fostering equality, showcased in the Municipality of Quinapondan, in the Philippines. Initiatives should focus on data collection & community-based interventions. • Gender-integration in medical curricula in Maharashtra India is supporting recognising and responding to gender bias in medical education and practice, ultimately improving quality of care. • Gendered responses to climate shocks. Heat stress disproportionately affects women's health, particularly pregnant women. Integrating climate resilience into healthcare planning from a gendered lens, such as raising awareness of perinatal heat risks, enhances gender-sensitive responses. • Investing in gender equality and health systems both uplifts women & marginalised groups while strengthening global resilience to crises, ensuring quality of care, dignity & better outcomes for all. Our United Nations University - IIGH decolonial feminist futures workshop is happening tomorrow! If you're in Nagasaki for #HSR2024 Health Systems Global, join Emma Rhule, PhD and me at 9:40 AM to embark on a collective journey towards just and sustainable health systems for all.

The session on Gender Responsive Health Systems at HSR in Nagasaki Japan, led by experts who generously shared their professional and lived experience, was enlightening. The audience gained new perspectives, while building skills for developing patient rights, and their already vast networks to improve people-centred healthcare.  The IIGH session had a mix of presentations, simulation exercises, role plays, experience sharing and critical reflections. Participants learned how to transform built-in biases in health providers curricula, how intersectional perspectives can be integrated into built spaces of health care provisions, and how cross cutting principles of gender-responsive health care provisions can be leveraged for a more people-centred healthcare.
