Just a boy navigating the intersection between heritage, urbanism and climate change in an ending world

I had the privilege to be a part of this last Friday at the gorgeous Asia School of Business campus. I really enjoyed the deep dives into the incredible work done by URBANMETRY as well as listening to the topics presented by them as well as other works in progress by Rapid Bus. As a semi-regular user, I look forward to any improvements that can be done to the bus service that will hopefully make the ride experience more convenient for everyone. I also had a great time meeting new people (and some fellow Young Birders 🤪) and learning about what they do and what else is in the pipeline; something I always look forward to when attending these events. Was thrilled to have met Mr Kian-Ming Ong himself for the first time as well as Aziff Azuddin, Mathana Muhilan and Solahuddeen Hibatur Rahman, three very passionate longtime members of TRANSIT. Once again, thanks a lot to everyone for having me along for the ride and here's to better busses for everyone o7.

On 25 October, we had the opportunity to attend URBANMETRY's “Modelling Greater KL with Big Data” forum in collaboration with RapidKL at the Asia School of Business, Kuala Lumpur in collaboration. A plethora of eye-opening data was presented, as well as an interesting glance at the role AI and Machine Learning (ML) play in collecting and processing the data used to make our cities a better place for everyone. We were also delighted to tune into the positive reception about potential improvements being delivered by RapidBus, as it is a crucial mode of transport complementing the current rail system. While inspiring, it has also generated more questions that can be asked and discussed in the mapping industry about the different aspects involved, including the role of Geographic Information System (GIS). Once again, we are very grateful to have participated in an insightful review of data analytics and its key role in improving public transportation behind the scenes. Special thanks to Sharon Ling for inviting us to this event. Thanks to our Transit Malaysia members Aziff Azuddin Solahuddeen Hibatur Rahman, Mathana Muhilan, Vincent Koh, Wan Faiz Wan Zaidi, Cheong Sze Hoong Zac and Aqiel M. for taking the time to attend the talk!

Last Friday, I was thrilled to join an insightful event organized by URBANMETRY on ‘Modeling Greater KL with Big Data!’ 🏙️ A big shoutout to data analyst Chin Chin Gan for her interesting sharing on the team’s hard work cleaning up dirty data for the Bus Modeling project. Even though the technical “ping” is complex, it’s inspiring to see how their efforts are transforming raw data into actionable insights that will shape a more efficient and livable KL. Here are three key takeaways from the Rapid Bus CEO, En Muhammad Yazurin Sallij as we look to the future: 1. Building the right tools to harness data effectively 🛠️ 2. Gaining a deep understanding of commuter demand 🧠 3. Influencing each persona to choose public transport 🚌✨ Talks and forums like this are invaluable in helping us move forward. Excited to see how big data and AI will create smarter, more connected urban spaces! #UrbanPlanning #SmartCities #BigData #Technology #PublicTransport

It’s been a week since we wrapped our event—Modelling Greater KL with Big Data! We had a great time bringing together an inspiring group of industry leaders, passionate professionals, and innovative thinkers for the public transportation cause ✨ It was a fantastic opportunity to connect and brainstorm, and have our Chief Data Analyst, Chin Chin Gan and Lead Data Scientist, Son Lam Ho share their work on the Network Planning Tool (NPT) following the opening introduction from ASB's Deputy Dean of Research Dr. Melati Nungsari, and UrbanMetry's CEO Cha-Ly Koh. A huge thank you to Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd of PRASARANA MALAYSIA BERHAD for trusting us with the NPT and Asia School of Business for the venue. The lively fireside chat with En. Muhammad Yazurin Sallij, Dr. Kian-Ming Ong, Dr. Sam Flanders and Kar Yern Chin sparked interesting conversations. Everyone who attended and contributed to the discussions truly made the event special! 🙌 We’re excited about the partnerships and ideas that emerged from our conversations. Together, we’re shaping the future of public transportation, and we can’t wait to see what’s next. P.S. For those who are curious, 39% of our attendees used public transportation to get to our event! Hopefully, that number will increase next time! 🚌 #UrbanPlanning #PublicTransportation #DataAnalytics #CityData #AI #URBANMETRY #NetworkPlanningTool #BigData #BuildBetterCities

I had been following URBANMETRY with avid interest on their works using big data analytics in property development and city planning ever since i stumbled upon them online. Jumped on the opportunity to attend an open event of theirs on friday at Asia School of Business, where they shared some findings on their works with Rangkaian Pengangkutan Integrasi Deras (RapidKL) regarding RapidBus routes and ridership trends around KV. Personally, am looking forward to any future data on flash flooding and environmental risks for greater KV. Very, very interesting times. Witnessing the nascent venture of big data influencing future Kuala Lumpur in real time.

It is one of those presentations which pushes researchers to be sound in data, engaging in content, and practical in solutions, especially in the area of #urbanplanning, #publictransportation and #economics. Such is the substance of ‘Modelling Greater KL with Big Data’, co-organised by URBANMETRY, Rapidbus and Asia School of Business. While the findings from both presenters, Chin Chin and Dr Sam Flanders may be preliminary, using platforms like this to share datasets and its methodology (math, maps & graphs) proves to be an eye opener. Often big data equates to high capex investment in sophisticated technologies, but PPPs like the above (private, public, academia) can produce effective outcomes, too. The push to democratise data, data privacy from third parties and cleaning “dirty” data were discussed, and once leveled up, can become effective and cheaper to use in future, as discussed in the Q&As. Apart from the potential influence in public policy this final document would have for the Selangor Greater Klang Valley (#SGKV) in near future, I am cheekily curious about the percentage of attendees who travelled by public transport vs private vehicles. Prof Dr Kian-Ming Ong, Muhammad Yazurin Sallij, Dr Sam Flanders, Cha-ly Koh, Chin Chin Gan

It's a good reminder of how creative and innovative the world is at solving problems. Today, URBANMETRY demonstrated their modelling prowess to identify key drivers of bus ridership, and they've built an optimisation engine for Prasarana Malaysia's bus routes to ease future route modelling. Then we learned of Prof. Sam Flander's ingenious approach to mapping Malaysia's informal hawker economy, combining computer vision with Google Street View data. This is how public-private partnerships ought to work: entrepreneurs, researchers and policymakers collaborating to create real impact. It's especially inspiring because, contrary to common perception, large-scale data projects are not easy—the reality is often messy, incomplete data. The good news? AI tools are making data cleaning not just easier but significantly more cost-effective. Public agencies everywhere should be capitalising on this.
