While the annual Sustainable Oil Palm Study Journey was taking place in Chumphon, the JaSPON (Japan Sustainable Palm Oil Network) group embarked on a parallel study journey in Kampar. JaSPON, a collective of Japanese companies and organisations, is dedicated to promoting sustainable palm oil production and consumption in Japan. Their visit focused on engaging with smallholder farms to gain firsthand insight into upstream sustainable palm oil practices. In addition to visiting RSPO-certified smallholder farms, their itinerary included stops at non-RSPO certified farms, a trip to Salu Waterfall to explore the forest reserve, and an authentic meal at a local farmer's home. While the powers that be were busy wrangling over the clauses in the EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR), American photographer and documentary storyteller James Whitlow Delano ventured into rural Malaysia to meet independent oil palm smallholders to get their side of the story. In his impartial reporting for Inside Climate News, a US-based non-profit news organization, Delano shares the narratives of #wags (Wild Asia Group Scheme) farmers and how they navigate layers of sustainability certifications with the help from #wildasia. His extensive report also spotlights some of the smallholders’ nature-positive farming practices.  In essence, the article touches on how EU’s requirements for palm oil imported from Malaysia and other countries “present uncertainties for farmers with small holdings that led to confusion, apathy and ignorance about the new rules.” With the delay of the #EUDR implementation for another year, as voted by the European Parliament on November 14th, let’s hope there’s enough time to sort out the “confusion” and to secure smallholder farmers’ inclusion in the global supply chain. 🤞 Thank you Delano and Inside Climate News for letting the smallholders’ voices be heard!   #sustainablepalmoil #RSPO #MSPO Reza Azmi

Thank you to Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) for another well executed RT and for bringing together the important players and key figures from the global palm oil industry, government representatives and conservation groups. At Wild Asia’s 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗺 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻, 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱, participants will have the unique opportunity to connect directly with our WAGS smallholder farmers, including 𝗞𝗵𝘂𝗻 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶 and 𝗞𝗵𝘂𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗮, who are leading the way in sustainable practices. At 45, 𝗞𝗵𝘂𝗻 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶 is among the younger farmers in a region where most are between 55 and 70 years old. He played a key role in encouraging the Banthewangthong Cooperative—a group of 𝟯𝟱 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀—to join, fostering a commitment to sustainable farming within his community. 𝗞𝗵𝘂𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗮, a seasoned farmer, began his journey in agriculture in 1985 and pivoted to palm oil in 1990 after Typhoon Gay devastated Chumphon Province. Originally focusing on crops like coffee, rubber, and fruit, he recognized the potential of the emerging palm oil industry and led his transition after the storm. He brought together around 𝟳𝟬 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 to form the Banprutakien Cooperative, and by joining WAGS, they now benefit from support and training to achieve RSPO certification while enhancing soil health and sustainability. This study journey offers a firsthand look at the impact of WAGS on these communities and the dedication of farmers like Khun Phonsanti and Khun Panya to sustainable palm oil production. While having a BSc and MSc background  in Engineering, a doctorate in Public Administration, as well as having experience serving in the provincial government, Khun Nuntawat chose to head Thasae Moo 6, an oil palm farming cooperative with 38 members in Thasae, Chumpon Distric.  This community-driven initiative advocates for sustainable farming and nature-based solutions.  With extensive land holdings in the area, Khun Nuntawat’s family has always committed to improving farmer livelihoods, ensuring income security and rejuvenating the land for future generations. His intimate knowledge of local contexts and English proficiency makes him a natural connector between his farming peers and Wild Asia in the drive to promote WAGS certification efforts and BIO Outreach programmes.
