In October 2023, Benchmark launched ASCEND, the inaugural general manager readiness program, for a global cohort of high-potential leaders to prepare them for possible future promotions to General Manager & other key executive positions. I had the distinct honor of structuring the blended program in partnership with the business, often building content one quarter ahead of the group. Content development was fast paced and at times stressful, and all the while extremely rewarding. Through it all, these leaders trusted me with their experience, and I’m so proud of each of them and their growth over the last 15 months. As of this week, the program officially wrapped, and in its place, is a period of reflection. Here’s what I have learned: 1. Ask for help. As an L&D team of one, my work bottlenecked as many priorities converged. I had to lean on others to support me so I could continue to meet all deliverables. 2. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow. After months of planning for the first in person session with the cohort, a key executive at the time upended the content 3 weeks before the session. I had to restructure a full day of learning, which led me back to #1. 3. My training as a black belt in Taekwondo is a source of strength. The word fear has a particular meaning for me and my black belt friends. FEAR … Face Everything And Rise (credit to Zig Ziglar). This week, I led the cohort through the Change Cycle and tools they can use as managers to help employees manage change. I was “nerva-cited” (nervous + excited) to be sure. I kept repeating to myself the mantras I learned in my training … “Belief is Yes I Can” … “If it’s to be, it’s up to me” … “this challenge makes me stronger” … “I can - I will.” Training as a black belt is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, next to parenting, and remembering this helped me put this facilitation into perspective. This was a piece of cake compared to 3-on-1 sparring. Congratulations, ASCEND team! Onwards and upwards for you, as they say.
