Siwa is an Oasis city in Egypt that’s built around many underwater springs. There so much to do here from picnics in the desert, historical sights, cultural sights, hot spring spas, salt water lakes (where you can float so easily), salt caves, and Cleopatra’s pool that’s 26ft deep. You will have a blast here. I spent 3 days here and wish I could stay an extra day. Be mindful that the flies here are a persistent breed and lots of mosquitos, so bring long sleeves and pants. The Temple of Kom Ombo in Egypt is located along the Nile Rive. This is a very unique double temple dedicated to two gods: Sobek the crocodile god and Horus the falcon god. I went there at night and it makes the atmosphere even more mysterious. Getting There - I went to Kom Ombo Temple as part of my Nile cruise tour. Highlights - The temple has symmetrical twin sanctuaries, each honoring one of the gods. The temple is known for its intricate carvings, on the walls and columns, including depictions of ancient medical instruments, which was so interesting. There is a Crocodile Museum nearby which displays mummified crocodiles once worshipped at the site. First time seeing mummified crocodiles. In the 1960s, the temples were relocated to a new location to save them from being submerged by the rising waters of Lake Nasser, which was created by the construction of the Aswan Dam. $40 million so much money was paid by UNESCO to relocate the Abu Simbel temple complex (in 1960 it was $40 million; adjusted for inflation in 2023 it's approximately $400 million) The relocation of the Abu Simbel temples was a massive undertaking that involved cutting the temples into large blocks, transporting them to a new location, and then reassembling them. The temples were relocated to a new location about 65 meters higher and 200 meters back from the river. This temple is not only incredibly grand but also has an amazing history of rescue. With 1 full day in Cairo, of course the pyramids are my first stop. Oh & picture or it didn’t happen! The pyramids are located 15km from the city center of Cairo. If you think they look impressive in photographs, wait till you’re standing at the foot of one of the pyramids! Business Hours: 7:00 - 18:00 Arrive early to purchase your ticket (starting at $10) Be prepared to spend at least 3 hours inside. Recommended visiting time: October to March (Winter) Once inside you can see the Pyramid of Khufu, Pyramid of Khafre, The Great Sphinx, Pyramid of Menkaure, Cemeteries, Tombs and Temples. There is A LOT to see, learn and photograph. Activities available inside are quad biking, horse riding, Camel rides, guided tours etc.. carry some $1 notes for tipping if that’s your thing. There are many souvenir stores all around the place but you will need to know how to bargain because the prices are hiked up as it is a tourist spot. Recommendation: go inside (walk) see all you need to see then save the activities for the end. Wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses for your own health and safety. Cairo is filled with so much in one city ! Of course you need to see the great #Pyramids of Giza ! Book a small hotel across from them for the best view. I stayed at the Egypt pyramids Inn and enjoyed my stay. Make sure you have a local guide. They can customize much more for you and give you a more authentic experience. The new museum was really cool ! Be aware that as a tourist many of locals will invite you to shop, be clear about what you interested in buying so you don’t waste time being haggled into shopping.
