The City of Rams — Colonial Architecture in Shamian
Shamian is a sandbank island on the southern edge of Liwan District in Guangzhou. Situated on the riverside of the Pearl River, the area was, for centuries, a foreign trading post. Shamian’s role as the conduit of trade spanned the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was also a place of leisure and tourism as well. In the more recent 19th century, Shamian was a location of heavy foreign presence. Many countries have set up their consular offices in this area. In fact, the Polish Consulate of Guangzhou is still in Shamian today. Needless to say, it was also a prime location for business operations, such as foreign banks and trader offices (the “Hongs”—like the Thirteen Factories).
This would be the appropriate moment to bring back the memory of the Thirteen Hongs of Canton. This history is closely related to Shamian as we know it now. In 1856, the Second Opium War broke out. Great Britain launched extensive firepower against Guangzhou. This touched off a wave of local protests that resulted in the Thirteen Factories Enclave being burnt to the ground. The Second Opium War would last till 1860, during this time the British had taken control of Guangzhou.
Given Shamian’s historic role as a trading post, it came as no surprise that Shamian was eyed by the foreign powers as their foothold in Guangzhou. Shamian became a concession area for Great Britain and France beginning in the 11th year of the Xianfeng Reign (1861). The British abandoned the plans for rebuilding the Thirteen Factories Enclave, and instead looked to build Shamian.
Allow for at least two hours to walk through all the streets in Shamian. There are recreational areas as well as coffee shops for you to stop and take rest.

The Temple of Six Banyan Trees
#chinaattractions Guangzhou also has many interesting attractions. One of the must-visit highlights is the ancient Six Banyan Trees Temple, which holds great historical significance.
In the past, the temple had six old banyan trees, but now only three remain. The temple features a pagoda, three large Buddha statues, and a statue of Guanyin. Some Chinese visitors walk around the pagoda three times while chanting prayers. If you want to make a wish, you can buy a ribbon, write your wish on it, and tie it to one of the banyan trees.
The temple is well-maintained, very clean, and peaceful, with few visitors. There's also a vegetarian food stall available.
How to get there: Take the metro to Gongyuanqian Station, then walk for about 10 minutes.

Dafo Temple in Guangzhou
#chinaattractions If you're traveling to Guangzhou, Dafo Temple (The Great Buddha Temple) should be on your itinerary! Located in the heart of Beijing Road Pedestrian Street, this temple can be visited both during the day and night, and I highly recommend experiencing both. Daytime, locals come to pray, and all temple buildings are open.
Nighttime, the temple is beautifully illuminated, creating a breathtaking sight, though some buildings may be closed.
The temple grounds are quite large, with multiple buildings. Inside, you'll find a wood-carved statue of Guan Yin and a spacious courtyard. Walk further in, and you'll discover the main hall housing three enormous golden Buddha statues. Visitors can also purchase a red ribbon (10 RMB) to write their names and wishes for blessings.
Dafo Temple is a must-see landmark in Guangzhou and a significant cultural site. After your visit, you can easily continue exploring Beijing Road Pedestrian Street, which is just steps away.

Planning a Trip to Guangzhou? Just Consider These 3 Things! 7 Days Itinerary
We were super happy with our itinerary—probably the most successful family trip we’ve ever had!
Here’s our actual itinerary for Guangzhou:
• Day 1: Arrive – Mehood Liz Hotel (near the airport)
• Day 2: Check-in at CityNote Hotel – Guangdong Museum – Haixinsha – Dafosi Temple
• Day 3: Nanyue King Museum – Yuxi Study – Massage – Shopping at Beijing Road

How to Plan a Great Itinerary?
Honestly, it’s not about reading countless travel guides or making endless plans. The key is to constantly remind yourself of the purpose of this trip!
When traveling with family, the most important thing is spending time together. Skipping or adding a sightseeing spot doesn’t really matter.
If you’re traveling for sightseeing and photo ops, go with friends instead. When traveling with parents, comfort is the priority. Even for us younger ones, too much running around gets exhausting and frustrating, which ruins the mood.
Key Guangzhou Attractions
• Landmarks: Canton Tower, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Dafosi Temple
• Musical Fountain: Haixinsha
• Tourist Hotspots: Yongqingfang
• Shopping: Beijing Road, major malls
• Cultural Sites: Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Guangdong Museum, Art Museum, Nanyue King Museum, Shamian Island
So, how should you plan your itinerary? Just focus on these 3 things:
✅ Weather
✅ Mood on that day
✅ Everyone’s energy levels

Nighttime light walk in Guangzhou
Recommended places to walk around in the evening, see the lights of the buildings decorated with beautiful lights
+ Zhujiang New Town, near the metro and apm stations, is a large square. Underground here is a shopping mall and restaurants. Above is a square with lights of various buildings on one side and lights of the Canton Tower on the other side. In this square, there are lights buried underneath, which change color all the time. If you come to Guangzhou, you should really come here.
+ Liede Bridge, lights on the bridge, touch the water to see the lights from the riverside near Canton Tower or Haixinsha.
+ Yongqingfang is a road along the canal. The highlight is the bridge with lights on underneath. You can see the lights reflecting off the water and forming a crescent moon.
+ Dafo Temple in Beijing Road, in addition to praying for blessings, the temple also has lights on the temple buildings, which are very beautiful.

Three Buildings with Distinct Architecture at the Liwan Museum in Guangzhou
To enter the Liwan Museum, you must do a pre-booking. You may do so with your WeChat account on the spot and registration was relatively easy. There is no fee for touring the museum.
The Liwan Museum consists of a cluster of three beautiful buildings, each in its own architectural style.
The Former Residence of Jiangguangnai
Jiang Guangnai was a key Republican (Kuomintang) general during the Second Sino-Japanese War. He was a faithful follower of Dr. Sun Yatsen’s cause. In 1931, the September 18 incident resulted in Japan occupying the northeastern parts of China. In 1932, Japan also raised an offensive in Shanghai, and Jiang Guangnai led his troops to resist the Japanese.
The Former Residence of Jiang Guangnai is a brick and wood building that combines both the styles of the Xiguan Old House and western architecture. There are three stories on the building, and each floor is open for visitation. It was built during the late Qing, early Republican period. The site is now well-restored and it is a very pleasant walk in the structure.
Xiguan Old Mansion
The proper name of the Xiguang Old Mansion within the Liwan Museum is Xiguan Folk Customs Museum. Of the three buildings in the Liwan Museum, I enjoyed the touring of the Xiguan Old Mansion the most. This rebuilt structure showcases the typical Xiguan Old Mansion with antique wooden furniture. The introduction on site was short, easy and amply served the purpose of unveiling the life of Old Xiguan.
The Former Residence of Chen Lianbo
Chen Lianbo was a banker and the grand building really reflects his wealth. His residence was built during the early Republican Period. He was once the comprador for HSBC (Europe). This house was once the meeting venue for Liwan Club, where foreign affairs officials, and highly important people from commerce and industries gathered.
Finally, there was a display of an interesting miniature-landscape phenomenon inside the museum compound. The Flying Banyan on the Rockery shows an old banyan tree sinking its roots over the original stone landscape sculpture.

The best HOTEL RECOMMENDATIONS in Guangzhou - A Luxury Trip Cost only $33/person per night!
Accommodation Guide:
I’m very picky when it comes to hotels, so I compared many options before the trip. If you’re traveling to Guangzhou, this list covers everything you need!
Luxury Hotels (MYR 700–1,200 per night)
(Ranked in order)
• Hotel Indigo (Haixinsha area)
• Jumeirah (Near Guangdong Museum)
• Ritz-Carlton (Near Guangdong Museum)
• Rosewood (Near Guangdong Museum)
• Park Hyatt (Near Guangdong Museum)
• Conrad (Near Guangdong Museum)
Mid-Range Hotels (MYR 300–600 per night)
• Mercure (Beijing Road branch) – Right across from Tianhe City Shopping Mall
• Atour S Hotel (Beijing Road branch)
• CityNote Xinuo Hotel (Highly recommended: Xindaxin or Dafosi branches)
• Both are newly opened!
• Xindaxin branch: Next to Mayflower Shopping Plaza
• Dafosi branch: Quieter environment
• Ji Hotel (Quanji Hotel)
• YiZhi Hotel (Yizhi Hotel)
Where to Stay Based on Your Travel Style:
• For shopping: Stay near Yongqingfang or Beijing Road
• For luxury experience: Stay near Haixinsha or Guangdong Museum
• For local culture: Stay in Yongqingfang, Yuexiu District, or Wuyangcun
• Avoid Haizhu District – It’s quite far and doesn’t have much to offer, so I didn’t research it.
Since I was traveling with my parents, convenience and comfort were the top priorities. If you’ll be out exploring all day, a mid-range hotel offers the best value.
Hotels I Stayed In:
First Night – MeHood Liz Hotel (T1 Terminal) – Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport
• 10-minute drive from the airport
• Free shuttle service – Call the hotel upon arrival, and they’ll arrange a driver (waiting time: 10–20 minutes)
Main Stay – CityNote Xinuo Hotel (Beijing Road Xindaxin branch)
• Opened in March 2024 – New, clean, and comfortable
• Upgraded to the largest room for free
• Check-in on the 7th floor, rooms on 8th–9th floors
• Important for light sleepers: Avoid staying here on weekends, as there’s a bar upstairs
✅ Pros:
• Brand new hotel, clean, well-equipped
• Spacious rooms
• Excellent service
• Can receive parcels delivered directly to the room
❌ Cons:
• Only one elevator, so wait times can be long
• Rooms had some dust buildup

Looking for a Green Oasis in a Concrete City?
Guangzhou is a megalopolis: 18.7 million people and skyscrapers that are 100 stories high. Sometimes you need a place to go and chill, to rest outside. Canton Place is the perfect place. A rotunda of restaurants circling an inner green courtyard, with each restaurant having an outside patio for food and drinks. Local food? Italian? Spanish? Mexican? All covered plus more. This is a perfect place to have a relaxing brunch and enjoy the warm Guangdong climate ☀️ 📍Address: Canton Place, Guangzhou 🕰️Business Hours: 08:00-24:00 #guangzhou #chinatravel #outdoor #vibes
Sesame Magic: Experience One of Asia’s Top 50 Bars
Can you find the magic door? Hidden behind a plain storefront is a secret passage to one of Asia’s Top 50 bars: Hope & Sesame, a stylish, sophisticated speakeasy. With creative cocktails that showcase unique flavors and fresh ingredients, each drink is a work of art. My personal recommendation? The black garlic Manhattan served with three exquisite chocolate/garlic pearls. Reservations recommended, although walk-ins are possible if you come early #cocktails #glamour #top50 #bars #nightlife #guangzhou #dongshankou #chinatravel 🕰️Business Hours: 18:00-02:00 📍Address: 中国广州市天汇区兴国路1-3号1楼
