Conservation efforts on the Sanctuary don’t only target large mammals and sea life! This flap-neck chameleon was retrieved from a road where it was at risk and relocated to the safety of a tree. This chameleon species is widespread throughout Southern Africa across a number of habitats, but is seldom here seen due to its ability to camouflage expertly against the cover of vegetation. Males and females can easily be told apart, with males having a conspicuous swelling at the base of the tail and a small spur on each hind foot. This individual is quite clearly a female.
