Conservation efforts on the Sanctuary don’t only target large mammals and sea life! This flap-neck chameleon was retrieved from a road where it was at risk and relocated to the safety of a tree. This chameleon species is widespread throughout Southern Africa across a number of habitats, but is seldom here seen due to its ability to camouflage expertly against the cover of vegetation. Males and females can easily be told apart, with males having a conspicuous swelling at the base of the tail and a small spur on each hind foot. This individual is quite clearly a female. Rolling into the weekend like... this dung beetle! Dung beetles play an important role in terrestrial ecosystems, helping to clean up the waste left by other animals. Dung beetles are classified as either “rollers” (like this one), carrying balls away to use as breeding chambers; “tunnelers”, which bury the dung precisely where they find it; or “dwellers”, which simply live in manure. In the community of Chigonguene in Queuene, a district of Vilankulos, women are being empowered and developing new skills through a partnership between Santuario Bravio de Vilanculos and Fundação Likhulu. Within the scope of the Resilient Coastal Communities Programme, which aims to diversify livelihoods, reduce dependence upon natural resources and promote sustainability in coastal communities, these women have been taught to sew beautiful handmade dugongs made from carefully sourced wool felt and 100% organic cotton for the retail market.
