In the words of the Founding Father, Dr. Sam Nujoma, “Vision 2030 is a roadmap to a Namibia that is industrialized, offers equal opportunities, and competes globally”. Industrialization, driven by Green Hydrogen, is a catalyst to achieving this Vision. My name is Giovanni du Plessis. I am presently pursuing a degree in accounting at the University of Namibia. Additionally, I serve as a host on UNAM Radio's Activated Talks and work as a producer for UNAMtv.
Today, I attended the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme Socioeconomic Impact Assessment Event as part of my ongoing commitment to learning about sustainable economic transformation and in my capacity as a member of Activated Talks. Hosted at the Avani Windhoek Hotel, the event provided a comprehensive breakdown of how Namibia’s green hydrogen initiative will fuel key industries like construction, mining, and transport, creating approximately 120,000 jobs for both skilled and unskilled Namibians. The discussions also highlighted the incredible potential of green hydrogen to unlock new industries such as fertilizer production and green iron, with Namibians set to be at the forefront of this transformation. Mr. James Mnyupe, Namibia’s Green Hydrogen Commissioner, delivered an outstanding presentation, explaining the roadmap and vision for this ambitious project. It’s inspiring to see how green hydrogen could redefine Namibia’s economy, making sustainability a driver of growth and opportunity. Thank you to all stakeholders for fostering these vital conversations about Namibia’s future. #GreenHydrogen #Sustainability #Namibia #EconomicTransformation #RenewableEnergy #Leadership

[WATCH] 🌍 Namibia's #Green Industrial Revolution is Here! Few days ago, #Namibia took a bold leap into the future of sustainable industrialisation with the placement of 12MW Electrolyzers-likely to be the largest modern #electrolyzers in Southern Africa, at the HyIron project near Arandis. A key highlight of the event was the announcement by Johannes Michels, co-founder of HyIron, of Namibia’s first commercial off-take agreement with BENTELER Group securing up to 200,000 tons of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) annually. The project, backed by a projected investment of €2.5 billion for expansion, will achieve an annual production capacity of 2 million tons of DRI by 2030, powered by Namibia’s abundant solar energy. During Phase 1 construction, over 400 local jobs were created, with N$90 million injected into the Namibian economy through collaborations with more than 60 local companies. Key officials that witnessed this event included Hon. Christine //Hoebes, Minister in the Namibian Presidency and James Mnyupe, 🇳🇦Green Hydrogen Commissioner, alongside over 25 journalists and scholars. This milestone underscores Namibia’s commitment to becoming one of the global leaders in #greenhydrogen and #industrialisation. Together, we are crafting a legacy for sustainable growth and innovation! [Video Credit: HyIron] #GreenIndustrialisation #SustainableDevelopment #RenewableEnergy #NamibiaVision2030

A few weeks ago, the Climate Neutrality Foundation from Germany released a study that looked at the viability of using Namibian produced direct reduced iron ore (DRI) as a strategic hydrogen carrier for strategic reserves in Germany. The results and importantly the study itself have catapulted Namibia to the coal face of research and development in the green hydrogen space. Check out the study here --> https://lnkd.in/d9e8Zf3w Let's unpack the ramifications 1 - We will use local iron ore or imported iron ore and add value to this mineral through its reduction using locally produced green hydrogen, adding almost 10x of value relative to the input cost of the iron ore itself. We will manufacture high value goods using raw materials - an ambition we have held since the advent of Vision 2030. 2 - This means that we are not producing hydrogen in Namibia for export (as touted by many) but we are rather using it to anchor and grow the secondary sector of our economy. 3 - We are now engaging buyers for this DRI who may use it in their steel making processes. We are also engaging auto manufacturers looking to decarbonize their scope 3 upstream related emissions. These buyers are not just from Europe but include interested parties from Asia, to South America and beyond. 4 - The DRI has yet another potential use, a chemical reaction using steam may result in the DRI binding with the oxygen from the steam, releasing hydrogen in the process. Therefore, we may be able to transport hydrogen across the seas by moving the DRI instead of trying to transport hydrogen itself. This could have significant ramifications on how green hydrogen may be transported internationally. The above is a lot to digest, so some basics to pause and consider include: - Namibia may announce off-take for a green hydrogen based product in Q4-2024! 6 years ahead of what many said was possible. - The new plant and new product has been delivered by Namibian youth and Namibian SMEs. Contrary to many who said Namibians lack the skills or the know how, to deliver hydrogen and or its derivatives to the world. - The endeavor is scalable, phase 1 is looking to export 15,000 tons of DRI, with production commencing in Q4-24/Q1-25. Phase 2 is 200,000 tons and phase 3, 2 million tons. - The developers have already secured more than €12 million to start developing phase 2 and 3. €200 million is being lined up to construct phase 2. On the 19th of November 2024, we shall take local media and interested parties to site to showcase this unique asset. Green industrialisation is not coming, it is here! HyIron secures German steel manufacturer Benteler as first off-taker HyIron has secured its first off-take agreement with German steel manufacturer BENTELER Group, which will see the supply of 200,000 tonnes of direct reduced iron (DRI) annually. The project commenced operations with a state-of-the-art 12MW electrolyser, the largest of its kind in Southern Africa, capable of producing 15,000 tonnes of DRI annually in its first phase. “It’s one thing to build something new and to have a vision for green industrialisation. Today, we announced our first off-take agreement for a Namibian green product, sold for the long term and with the potential to justify the next development phases,” co-founder of the HyIron-Oshivela project Johannes Michels said. https://lnkd.in/d6TqWPWp #namibia #germany #steelmanufacturing #greeniron #greenhydrogen #hyironoshivela Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) James Mnyupe Ministry of Mines and Energy Namibia (MME)
