THOUGHT PROVOKING CONVERSATIONS + IMPACTFUL CONNECTIONS Yesterday, 26 June 2024, marked a significant milestone in the history of NaSIA. The launch of the first session of “The NaSIA Networking Series”. The NaSIA Networking Series aims to create a structured platform where individuals and entities can convene, share insights, and build relationships. These events will serve as opportunities, for both members and other invited individuals, to engage in meaningful discussions, share best practices, and foster collaborations that contribute to the economic growth of Namibia. The Topic: “How to mobilise Namibia’s long-term savings to better address the development imperatives of Namibia in a sustainable manner and enhance the quality of life for Namibians”, was unpacked by Prof Anne Cabot-Alletzhauser and an esteemed panel of experts. Prof Anne Cabot-Alletzhauser started off with a thought provoking presentation, building on 15 years of research on the effectiveness of African Financial Systems for Addressing Funding Problems for Africans, drawing parallel to the original “developed country” design of a pension fund and why adopting the same model in an African context does not yield the intended results. Panelists Hendrik du Toit (Founder and CEO at Ninety One), Martin Inkumbi (Principal Officer and CEO at the GIPF), Immanuel Kadhila (Managing Director at EoS Capital) and Sydwill Scholtz (Operations Manager at the Retirement Funds Institute), unpacked the issue of sustainability in the context of Namibia and why it is important for the entire system (banks, DFIs, Pension Funds etc.) need to work together to solve for Namibia’s unique challenges. Key quotes: Martin Inkumbi: “ What does it help to have a good return on your pension fund, if the environment in which you retire, is poor” Hendrik du Toit: “If we do not do anything about climate change, we will not have cattle or mahangu fields in the north” Immanuel Kadhila: “Pension funds have done a lot in this country, and perhaps we need to tell more of these stories” Sydwill Scholtz: “People struggle to balance between black tax and saving for the future”. Prof Anne concluded by saying “Every investment has an impact, positive or negative, and we need to think deeply about that as we solve for our unique challenges”. Robyn Nakaambo did an amazing job as the MC of the event. Watch out for the next event later in the year. #NaSIANetworkingSeries #Sustainability #Longtermsavings #Nonbankingfinancilsector.
