Legal Counsel Professor Eyal Benvenisti concluded the presentation with their legal arguments, emphasising the significance of the hearings for the survival of future generations and the protection of the fundamental right to self-determination. This landmark case was successfully campaigned for by Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change, with significant support from the Government of Vanuatu. The Pacific Community (SPC) is the principal scientific and technical organisation in the Pacific region, proudly supporting development since 1947. We are an international development organisation owned and governed by our 26 country and territory members: American Samoa, Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, France, French Polynesia, Guam, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Pitcairn Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, United States of America, Vanuatu, and Wallis and Futuna. In pursuit of sustainable development to benefit Pacific people, our unique organisation works across more than 25 sectors. SPC is renowned for its knowledge and innovation in such areas as fisheries science, public health surveillance, geoscience and conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. Much of our focus is on major cross-cutting issues, such as climate change, disaster risk management, food security, gender equality, human rights, non-communicable diseases and youth employment. Using a multi-sector approach in responding to our members’ development priorities, we draw on skills and capabilities from around the region and internationally, and support the empowerment of Pacific communities and sharing of expertise and skills between countries and territories. With over 600 staff, SPC has its headquarters in Noumea, regional offices in Suva and Pohnpei, a country office in Honiara and field staff in other Pacific locations. #ResilientPacific | 🌏 Supporting Disaster Resilience in Papua New Guinea 🌴 The BSRP II team recently wrapped up a two-week mission in Papua New Guinea, where they: 📌 Worked with government agencies to finalise plans and budgets for 2025 📌 Held consultations with the National Disaster Center and other stakeholders 📌 Convened the Project Steering Committee meeting This mission helps lay the groundwork for implementing disaster resilience activities in 2025, supporting organisations such as the National Weather Services and the Department of Community Development and Religion. 🤝 BSRP II is a €14 million project funded by the European Union and implemented by the Pacific Community (SPC) to reduce disaster risks across 14 Pacific Island Countries and Timor Leste.

As the Pacific gathers in The Hague, a powerful hui honoured Indigenous knowledge and discussed the legal implications of the ICJ Advisory Opinion. The School Readiness Assessment Tool has been instrumental in helping ECCE teachers evaluate and respond to children’s developmental needs.
