#UPDATES from #PIDAWEEK2024 The 2024 edition of the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa - #PIDAWeek2024 started today, 25 November, at the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. (Click the link to visit the website: https://lnkd.in/dHJZr8Fe) This morning, the #AMCOW Executive Secretary, Dr Rashid Mbaziira, delivered the keynote address during the session on “Accelerating Preparation and Financing of Transboundary Water Projects: Bridging Capacity and Funding Gaps”. The session title could not be better fitting for where the water sector on the continent finds itself at this moment in time, he observed. This is given that the demand for capacity development and improvements in the financing of transboundary water projects, particularly transboundary water management, is defined by the role water plays in Africa’s ambitions for economic growth and social transformation. These ambitions are espoused by the African Union #Agenda2063, a key priority area of which is assuring water security. In this context, our aspirations for growth and transformation are juxtaposed with the influence of water access and use on overall economic output. As such, capacity and funding constraints in the water sector pose grave implications for the realisation of Africa’s development agenda. Dr Rashid Mbaziira proposed five key fundamentals for “Accelerating Preparation and Financing of Transboundary Water Projects: Bridging Capacity and Funding Gaps”, namely; 1. Promote a new narrative on water that recognises water’s full potential 2. Strengthen the business case for water investments 3. Develop water infrastructure as a means to providing a service to other sectors 4. Apply the principles for valuing water 5. Promote integrated approaches to facilitate investment-led transboundary water management From the #10thWorldWaterForum to the #9thAfricaWaterWeek, ongoing efforts to formulate the post-2025 Africa Water Vision and Policy must align the framework to the African Union #Agenda2063. Making the principles of valuing water the backbone of the action framework for financing its actualisation will assure the continent's inclusive and climate-resilient water security. AMCOW Showcases at the 4th African Union Pan African Youth Conference! We were thrilled to exhibit our work on #youth and #gender at the recent AU Pan African Youth Conference, where young leaders from across Africa engaged with our team and learned more about AMCOW's efforts. The enthusiasm and keen interest shown in AMCOW’s initiatives were motivating! One of the highlights was the active curiosity around the implementation of our #YoGIStrategy—an approach aimed at empowering youth involvement in the sustainable management of water resources and sustainable sanitation. The dynamic discussions and insightful questions from these future leaders reaffirmed that the next generation is ready to drive forward Africa’s water and sanitation agenda. We are excited about the future and look forward to nurturing these connections going forward for Africa's socio-economic development. #AMCOW #YouthEngagement #SustainableWaterManagement #YoGIStrategy #AUYouthConference Emmanuel Uguru
