From groundbreaking strategies to innovative collaborations, the conference reinforced the nation’s commitment to ending TB. Earlier this week, APIN Public Health Initiatives participated in the 4th National Conference on Infection Control (NCIC). Our priorities which include strengthening health systems, driving innovation, and advancing sustainable IPC (Infection Prevention Control) programming, align with the Global Health practices to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats. This event builds on the momentum of our recently concluded 2nd APIN Annual Symposium on Global Health Security, where we highlighted the critical role of collaboration in advancing global health security. At APIN, we are dedicated to leveraging such platforms to innovate, collaborate, and drive progress in healthcare. We wrapped up activities for 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence on a high note! As part of this global campaign, APIN Public Health Initiatives made impactful strides in raising awareness. Our representatives, Kucheli Wudiri (Senior Technical Officer, Prevention & Community Service) and Elizabeth Isah (Senior Technical Associate, Prevention & Community Service), joined the Armed Forces Radio Station to educate listeners on gender-based violence and answer critical questions from the community. This marks the culmination of our efforts during these 16 days but the fight to #EndGenderBasedViolence continues. Let’s keep advocating, educating, and taking action every day! Our commitment to raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and Gender Based Violence remains as strong as ever. Over the past week, our Oyo and Benue state teams engaged communities in the fight against HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence. Our Oyo State Team held a rally in Ibadan, educating the public on actions to end the HIV pandemic and provided information on testing facilities. Also to round up our activities for the 16 Day activism against Gender based violence (GBV), we raised awareness about GBV among Secondary school students, GBV responders, and representatives from ministries, law enforcement, media, and security agencies joined forces to foster solidarity with survivors and advocate for sustained efforts to end GBV. In Benue state, our team collaborated with stakeholders to raise awareness in Makurdi, starting with a road walk from Tito Gate to IBB Square. The Deputy Governor, Hon. Sam Ode, and the Benue State executive council joined us to reaffirm their commitment to ending HIV/AIDS. Together, we are driving change and building healthier, safer communities. World AIDS Day may have been on the 1st of December, but we are certainly not toning down our efforts to increase awareness about HIV/AIDS and available HIV services including counselling and testing, treatment and preventive strategies. Our HQ staff came out en-masse to engage with members of the Apo district in Abuja and provide life-saving information about HIV/AIDS. To #EndAIDS, the first step is ensuring that you get tested! #HIVTesting services, along with lifesaving Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) if found HIV-positive, are completely free in Nigeria and can be easily accessed at health facilities all over the country. So, get tested TODAY! Together, we can build a world free of HIV/AIDS.

Addressing an issue as critical as #GenderBasedViolence requires the participation of ALL stakeholders, including the media. Today, we collaborated with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Nigeria to host members of the press at our Media Roundtable on Gender-Based Violence (GBV). We laid the foundation by providing them with accurate and relevant information on the prevalence of GBV in Nigeria, disaggregated by sex and geopolitical zone, and also shared some of the interventions that we implement in partnership with CDC. The highlight of the event was the testimony of a GBV survivor. The survivor's story revealed the far-reaching, negative impact of GBV not only on the survivors but on their families. The event ended with an interactive Q&A session during which the media also made insightful suggestions about how we could strengthen our collaboration with them to amplify the stories of survivors and increase public awareness of GBV as well as the interventions available to survivors including treatment, mental health counselling and legal services. As part of our activities for the 16 Days of Activism campaign, APIN sensitized members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the Apo secretariat. Using interactive sessions, quizzes and role playing, we shared practical examples about how Gender-Based Violence manifests in our communities, homes and society, and what each of us can do when confronted with acts of violence against women & girls. This year’s theme, "UNiTE: End Violence Against Women and Girls" reminds us that change begins with each one of us. We can make a difference by challenging harmful cultural and societal norms; supporting and validating survivors; and speaking out against GBV to build a world where both genders can thrive and prosper. It’s World AIDS Day, and this year’s theme “Take the RIGHTS path to End AIDS” highlights the link between access to quality HIV services for People Living with HIV and human rights. We can only #EndAIDS when we begin to see and handle barriers in access to HIV and other health services as infringements on the rights of People Living with HIV. Here are a few things we can do: 1. Eliminate inequalities in access to HIV services for all groups especially women, girls and key population groups. 2. Ensure that everyone has access to accurate, timely health education that is tailored to their unique needs so that they can make informed health decisions. 3. Let Communities lead! Communities must be involved in planning for HIV-focused interventions targeted at their members. 4. Talk more about U=U! PLHIV need to know that it is possible to live life to the fullest and that they can achieve an undetectable viral load if they are consistent with their Antiretroviral Treatment (ARTs). 30+ years after the Beijing Platform for Action was put forward at the 4th UN Conference on Women, the world still records startling manifestations of inequality and discrimination against women.
