CARE in Nigeria

On Tuesday, 21st January 2025, I had the pleasure of being the master of ceremony at the CARE in Nigeria presentation of the research findings on ‘Gender Norms Learning Agenda’ that was conducted across some states in Nigeria (Kano, Enugu and Lagos). An interesting fact I am still mulling over is the gradual acceptance of women working outside of the home, this can easily be linked to the economic difficulties faced in the country but it has interestingly accelerated the development curve on women’s participation in the economy. Of course, there are still questions that one must ask; does this trend mean agency for women? Do women have complete autonomy over their finances? Has this moved the needle a bit closer for gender equality in its true sense? Does this translate to women having agency over their own bodies especially as regards sexual and reproductive health? The lead researcher Amina Baba Manu and her entire team did an incredible job.

Highlights from the Gender Norms Learning Agenda Dissemination Workshop This week, we gathered to discuss the findings of the Gender Norms Learning Agenda Research. The dissemination workshop was an incredible opportunity to explore how social norms affect the health, education, and livelihoods of women and girls in Nigeria. Key moments included: -Thought-provoking panel discussions on the intersection between Social norms and gender-based violence, child marriage, and women’s economic empowerment. -Insights into strategies for addressing harmful norms and promoting positive change. -Engaging conversations with stakeholders, experts, and advocates committed to gender equality. Our #WomenCrushWednesdays today are the incredible women fighting to end food insecurity and combat household nutrition in Nigeria! 💪 Access to nutritious food and food insecurity remains a critical challenge in Nigeria, with millions facing hunger and malnutrition daily. Rural communities bear the brunt of this crisis, with women and children being the most affected. When women and girls have improved access to information, resources, and economic opportunities, and are free to make their own decisions, hunger rates drop, and nutrition improves—not just for them, but for their families, communities, and countries. Through the CASCADE Project (Catalyzing Strengthened Policy Action for Healthy Diets and Resilience), CARE and partners are actively increasing access to nutritious food and creating resilience to economic shock by empowering rural women. This initiative recognizes women as the key to achieving sustainable food security and improving household nutrition. Wrapping Up a Productive Year 🌟 The CASCADE Nigeria project, implemented by CARE in Nigeria and Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)- Nigeria, and our partners, recently held its Annual Review and Planning Meeting to ensure the continued relevance and effectiveness of our strategies towards ending malnutrition for women and children under 5. 🌾 Highlights of the Meeting: ✅ Our team assessed project strategies and achievements against established targets to ensure we’re on track to deliver impactful results. ✅ Identified key achievements, challenges, and lessons to shape 2025 plans. ✅ Strengthened collaboration and alignment among consortium partners, fostering innovative ideas to strengthen implementation strategies. ✅ Identified key project achievements for increased learning, documentation, and showcasing of CASCADE’s impact. ✅ Laid the groundwork for scaling interventions, improving resilience to economic and climate shocks, and empowering women and communities.
