Free Legal Aid for the Wrongly Accused On February 19, 2025, Mr. Chigbogu Okonkwo was acquitted of murder at the Agbani High Court, after the prosecution relied on hearsay as their only evidence. The CAPIO legal team filed a no-case submission on his behalf, and the court agreed, freeing Mr. Okonkwo of all charges. At Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organization (CAPIO), we do not support or defend crime. Our mission is to help those wrongly accused receive fair representation. Through our free legal services, we aim to protect the rights of vulnerable individuals and promote a more just and compassionate society. Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organization (CAPIO), in collaboration with Cope and Live Mental Health Awareness Care Foundation and Bensther Foundation, held a special sensitization program for warders at Enugu State Maximum Security Custodial Center. The goal was to educate them on mental health and the dangers of substance abuse. Why Is This Important? 1️. Warders' Well-being – Stress, pressure, and tough conditions can affect the mental health of prison staff. This training helps them stay mentally strong. 2️. Helping Inmates – Many inmates struggle with mental health issues and drug addiction. When warders understand this, they can handle inmates with care, patience, and the right approach. 3️. Better Correctional System – A well-informed warder can support rehabilitation, making sure inmates truly change and re-enter society as better individuals. By educating warders, we are not just helping them—we are helping the inmates, the correctional system, and society as a whole.
