I had the privilege of participating in the National TB Conference 2024, a transformative event focused on tackling one of Nigeria’s most critical public health challenges: 𝑇𝑢𝑏𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑠 (𝑇𝐵). This year’s theme, 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜-𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲: 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐚 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐁 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚, underscored the pivotal role of collaboration in the fight to eradicate TB. The conference brought together stakeholders from Nigeria and around the globe, emphasizing the need for 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫-𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐁 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 to ensure no one is left behind. TB remains a daunting global health challenge. In Nigeria alone, over 𝟯𝟲𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗧𝗕 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟮𝟲% 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝗢𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀, 𝟵% 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻. Highlighting the disease’s devastating impact on vulnerable populations and the urgency for tailored, child-focused interventions. One of the standout moments of the conference was the 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, which shone a spotlight on the importance of * 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗰𝘆 in raising awareness about TB. The session highlighted how grassroots mobilization can serve as a powerful tool in bridging gaps in knowledge and healthcare access. Prominent speakers such as 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗠𝘂𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝗶 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗗𝗿. 𝗟𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗗𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘂 (𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗧𝗕 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽)𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗨𝗦𝗔𝗜𝗗) shared invaluable insights. They emphasized the transformative potential of public-private partnerships and the shared global responsibility in accelerating TB elimination efforts. Their words reinforced the necessity of working collectively across sectors to combat this public health threat. For me, the conference wasn’t just an opportunity to learn but also a call to action. Addressing TB requires more than medical interventions—it demands innovative partnerships , sustainable funding and grassroots engagement to ensure we reach even the most underserved communities. This experience deepened my resolve as a public health advocate to amplify the voices of the marginalized and push for equitable healthcare solutions. We all have a role to play in ensuring a TB-free Nigeria—and a healthier world for all. Today’s sessions were a powerful reminder that ending tuberculosis (TB) in Nigeria is impossible without addressing the silent crisis of childhood TB. With an estimated significant portion of TB cases being undetected or untreated in children, there is an urgent call for multi-sectoral collaboration to tackle this challenge. Key takeaways: Funding for pediatric TB programs must increase. Childhood TB remains underfunded and underprioritized despite being a critical component of our national health strategy. Interventions need to start locally. Targeted actions at the LGA level, supported by state and federal governments, are crucial for identifying and managing childhood TB cases. Leadership is essential. Engaging relevant leaders across all tiers of government, alongside private and community stakeholders, is pivotal for driving sustainable solutions. The time to act is now. By prioritizing children in our fight against TB, we protect the most vulnerable while accelerating our journey to end TB in Nigeria. Let’s keep this conversation going! How can we, as professionals in our respective fields, contribute to solving this challenge? Share your thoughts, insights, or experiences in the comments! • Last week, Breakthrough Action trained the Dawn of Life Foundation Staff on Community Engagement and risk assessment. The three days training which lasted from the 22nd of October 2024 to the 24th of October 2024, had a very big focus on emerging and re-emerging diseases like M-pox and other Zoonotic infections. Community Programming and equitable representation in community development wasn't left out too as our staff absorbed the knowledge from the training scheme dissected by the team of capable facilitators led by Dr Obinna Onuoha.
