Yesterday at #AfWASAICE2025, the conversation on sanitation data moved from theory to action. The first WSH Data Labs panel challenged sector leaders to rethink how utilities and municipalities use operational data—not just to track performance, but to transform it. Shuko Musemangezhi, Senior Consultant at Dev-Afrique unveiled the Sanitation Data Tools Dashboard, mapping out how utilities, municipalities, and regulators can assess, compare, and integrate sanitation data systems. Dr. George Wainaina (Eawag) led a dynamic panel featuring Joshua Kimotho (ESAWAS regulators association), Dr Dinos Constantinides (EDAMS Technology), Ornam Mulenga (Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company), and Deepa Karthikeyan (Athena Infonomics), unpacking what it takes to bridge the gap between scattered data and structured, scalable solutions that drive efficiency. One thing is clear: Data systems that sit in isolation don’t serve the sector. Alignment, investment, and cross-sector collaboration do. Next, we turn to non-sewered sanitation (NSS)—a critical but often overlooked piece of the puzzle. The NSS Data Systems Landscape Report will take center stage in our next session, presented by Grace Wambui, Consultant at Dev-Afrique laying the groundwork for a sector-wide rethink of how NSS data is captured and applied. Following, Kapanda Kapanda, Advisor at Dev-Afrique, will moderate a discussion with Timothy Wanjohi (@Nakuru Water and Sanitation Services Company (NAWASSCO) Nakuru Water and Sanitation Services Company (NAWASSCO) @NakuruWater), Chola Mbilima (National Water Supply and Sanitation Council(NWASCO)), Hezekiah Pireh) 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮), and Melody Allred (Gates Foundation), on what it takes to move from fragmented datasets to structured, scalable, and effective data systems that inform sector-wide decision-making. 📍Ebony Conference Room, Hall 20 | February 19, 2025 | 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 #𝗔𝗳𝗪𝗔𝗦𝗔𝗜𝗖𝗘𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. Non-sewered sanitation (NSS) accounts for a major share of urban and peri-urban sanitation services in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, the data systems tracking these services remain inconsistent, difficult to integrate, and underdeveloped—making it harder for utilities, municipalities, and regulators to monitor performance, plan investments, and strengthen service delivery. Building on the discussions at the African Water and Sanitation Association _ Association Africaine de l'Eau et de l'Assainissement (𝗔𝗳𝗪𝗔𝗦𝗔)'𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 & 𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗜𝗖𝗘) 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, WSH Data Labs 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗡𝗦𝗦 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱, 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. Sanitation services rely on data—but how that data is structured and applied determines its impact. Across Sub-Saharan Africa, utilities, municipalities, and regulators are collecting operational data, but many existing systems remain fragmented, difficult to scale, and disconnected from decision-making. Without the right frameworks in place, performance management, resource allocation, and service delivery remain inefficient. At the African Water and Sanitation Association _ Association Africaine de l'Eau et de l'Assainissement (𝗔𝗳𝗪𝗔𝗦𝗔)'𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 & 𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗜𝗖𝗘) 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, WSH Data Labs officially launches with a conversation on how sanitation data systems can move from fragmented tools to structured, scalable, and actionable solutions.
