Join us on today’s episode of our #FridayFarmFeature as we spotlight Sorghum. It is also called the great millet due to its rich nutritional value, versatility and low agricultural input requirement. Sorghum is predominantly grown in Northern Nigeria (Adamawa, Benue, Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau and Zamfara states). Statistica 2024 reported Nigeria as the second largest producer with over 6.7 million tonnes of sorghum globally. It has a high nutritional value as it contains gluten-free dietary fibres, essential minerals and proteins. Sorghum is used to produce bioethanol, edible oil, beverages, and other edibles, while the waste stalk from sorghum is used to make animal feed and building materials. In agriculture, sorghum plants are considered to be very adaptable attributed to their drought resistance. Sorghums are environmentally friendly as they require low agricultural inputs, less nitrogen and regenerate the soil with increased organic matter. Are you an agripreneur interested in Sorghum production? Here’s an investment guide with detailed information for optimized seed production, visit https://lnkd.in/dB4Ng9N3 for more insights. #EERC #FridayFarmFeature #Sorghum #Agriculture #NorthernNigeria #SustainableFarming #InvestmentGuide

In commemoration of the International Mountain Day, the importance of our natural resources becomes more visible, emphasizing the need for its conservation as Theodore Roosevolt stated, “The conservation of our natural resources is a fundamental problem, unless we solve that problem, it will avail us little to solve all others.” Mountains should be conserved as they are a valuable source of water, energy and biological diversity. This year’s mountain day focuses on mountain solutions for a sustainable future through innovation, adaptation and youth to restore its ecosystems. One of our program at the Environmental and Economic Resource Centre is focused on Natural Resource Management, aimed at supporting host government and communities through quality research and project implementation on protection and sustainable management of our regional and national resources towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). #EERC #InternationalMountainDay #NaturalResourceManagent #SDGs #EnvironmentalConservation #IMD2024

This week, in commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Environmental and Economic Resource Centre was highly represented at the Gender-Based Violence Not In My Backyard event with the theme on ‘Legal Resources Available to the Disability Community’ facilitated by the USAIDs Policy Support for Economic Growth (PSEG). The event had state chairpersons of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD NIGERIA) from Kaduna, Kano, Plateau, Sokoto, and Zamfara States. According to the World Health Organization, about 1.3 billion people have disabilities with 18% of women and 14.2% of males are PWDs. In this regard, the Speaker, Ms. Bunmi Eyelade, a senior program manager at Kimpact Development Initiative noted that women with disabilities are three times more vulnerable to domestic violence than women without disabilities, emphasizing the need for awareness about the challenges faced by these individuals and promoting their participation in all aspects of society. Major recommendations in protecting the rights of PWD include; 📌Strengthening the National Disability Act (NDA) and Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act. 📌Domestication of the NDA across all states in Nigeria. 📌Data collection for Gender-Based Violence as a key tool for advocacy. 📌Societal reorientation on protecting rights of People With Disability (PWD). 📌Awareness for PWD on their rights and access to justice. Together, we can protect PWD, and make policy formulation/implementation and decision-making more inclusive! PSEG! NA MUNE! #EERC #IDPD2024 #GenderbasedViolence #PSEG #PolicyImplementation #Equalrights #PWD

Today is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a day to recognise their strengths and abilities. This year’s theme focuses on strengthening the voices of these people, amplifying their abilities, and not seeing their disability as a barrier. In the 2018 Assessment of Disability Inclusion in Nigeria, the World Bank reported that about 29 million out of Nigeria’s total population are People With Disability (PWD). This statistics highlights the importance of promoting the rights and well-being of PWD in all spheres of society and sustainable development. We should always remember that DISABILITY IS NOT A BARRIER BUT DISCRIMINATION IS! Decisions and policies recognizing the PWD should be implemented! There should be ‘nothing about us without us’! #IDPD2024 #EERC #ChampioningDisabilityEquity #Inclusion #PWD #Abilityindisability #SustainableFuture #Diversity
