Today, we celebrate International Anti-Corruption Day 2024! This year’s theme: “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow's Integrity” saw the Center organizing a program on “The Role of Youth in Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Enhance Anti-Corruption,” where we discussed the innovative and transformative potential of young people in building a transparent future. From leveraging AI tools to monitor public procurement and detect fraud, to combating misinformation with cutting-edge technologies, our youth are proving that they are not just the leaders of tomorrow, they are the changemakers of today. At our event, we witnessed incredible discussions, inspiring debates, and innovative ideas that reinforce the importance of uniting technology, integrity, and the passion of young minds to create a corruption-free society. Corruption is a global challenge, but with the creativity, resilience, and collaboration of our youth, we can rewrite the narrative for a future defined by accountability and fairness. Together, let’s harness innovation, celebrate integrity, and continue to drive change! #iacd2024 #unitedagainstcorruption UNODC UNCAC Coalition MacArthur Foundation Umar Yakubu, Ph.D

What is important at this moment is the political will by countries concerned.
The “golden age of money laundering” is at an end or, at least according to David Lammy, the UK Foreign Secretary. Do you think government is serious about corruption, and recovering these proceeds and kleptocrat illicit funds. Are the sanctions against 3 kleptocrats a strong message of what is to come, or… Are they just ‘low hanging fruit’. Chatham House detailed in 2021 how the UK is ill-equipped to assess the risk of corruption from transnational kleptocracy calling on the UK government to create a hostile environment for the world’s kleptocracy. And yet... If we focus on Nigeria, as an example, and moving illicit funds into the UK's financial and property markets, in over a decade, only David Ibori has been prosecuted and now Diezani Alison-Madueke has been charged in the UK for bribery. Given the hundreds of high value corruption and money laundering cases in Nigeria Why aren’t more illicit funds being identified and confiscated? Why aren’t more kleptocrats sanctioned? So… How can you change this pattern? What are your options? Going after the money as a number 1 priority. So what simple steps can the UK take. It is acknowledged that money laundering routes can be made complex in nature, therefore, there is a need for stronger collaboration between international law enforcement and financial intelligence capabilities that includes: Greater resources and funding for law enforcement agencies that include Serious Fraud Office (UK), National Crime Agency (NCA) and City of London Police (National Fraud Lead) to support the proactive identification and laundering of the proceeds of corruption into the UK and their enablers. Greater collaboration with non-profit organisations that seek to address corruption challenges. As a case example. Center for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity highlighted the trend in Nigeria where public officials relocate their families abroad that includes their children’s education whilst remaining in their post in Nigeria exploiting national resources. Why is this new approach important? In summary... Funding a proactive international collaboration in identifying and recovering the proceeds of corruption works. As the Chairman of the EFCC stated. If you allow the corrupt or those you are investigating to have access to the proceeds of their crime, they will fight you with it. Are we on the right approach? What else can you do to recover the proceeds of corruption?
