The Power of a Growth Mindset in Leadership There is a stereotypical fantasy of what leadership entails and what characteristics a leader should possess: a leader should be self-aware, communicative, have integrity, and be resilient. This is not to say that these characteristics aren't valuable; however, all of these will amount to little without a growth mindset. According to Professor Carol Dweck in her book The New Psychology of Success, a growth mindset is the belief that you can develop your skills and talents through hard work, the right strategies, and guidance from others. Research has found that 8 out of 10 successful leaders possess this mindset. It doesn’t just position them for success, but it also helps leaders foster a culture of innovation and adaptability that drives their organizations forward—unlike its counterpart, a fixed mindset. A fixed mindset is the belief that one's abilities are innate and cannot be changed. People with a fixed mindset tend to exhibit similar characteristics, such as: - Giving up easily - Avoiding challenges - Rejecting constructive criticism Cultivating a growth mindset is crucial for the stability and development of both individuals and organizations. How, then, do we harness this mindset in the leaders of tomorrow? Begin by recognizing that this mindset can be developed and that anyone can change how they think—all it takes is making that decision. Here are a few tips to help develop a growth mindset: - Embrace challenges: Understand that challenges will always come, and view them as opportunities to grow. - Enjoy the process: Remember that growth takes time; focusing on the journey helps build patience and resilience. - Build a support network: Surround yourself with people who encourage and support your growth. - Stay focused on your priorities and goals: Keep your objectives clear to help you stay motivated. - Learn every day: Approach each dayas a chance to learn something new. - Stay positive: Maintaining a positive attitude helps you stay motivated and resilient. Ultimately, a growth mindset is a powerful tool for achieving one’s goals and realizing one’s full potential. This is why at FMGA, we have created a mentorship program that pairs young girls eager to learn with experienced mentors who believe in continuous development. Empowering Young Girls and Leaders: Why Mentorship Matters. Starting on your own in a world full of uncertainty, managing everyday difficulties, and the constant evolution of technology can be especially difficult for any growing child. The urge to define who they are and find clarity on what their purpose is can be challenging. At FMGA, our goal is to help young girls unlock their full potential by educating and equipping them with the knowledge and resources they need to become useful to themselves and society at large. For us at FMGA mentorship is at the core of what we do and here’s why; ✅ It provides a new perspective: Mentorship helps young people understand who they are and who they want to become. It also promotes a feeling of awareness and discovery that can only come through intentional efforts ✅ It breaks down barriers to access: Mentorship provides access to networks, resources, knowledge, experiences, and opportunities ✅  It brings about goal achievement: With structures in place to bring about accountability setting goals and career attainment becomes easier with mentorship ✅ It equips one with the skills and competencies needed to navigate life Mentorship instills skills such as confidence, critical thinking, and adaptability in individuals encouraging them to take risks and pursue their goals ✅ It builds resilience  Mentorship teaches one how to bounce back from setbacks and life challenges Mentorship is like the training wheels you get on a bike while learning; you can learn from the mistakes of other and their experiences and we are here to create that community, that training wheels community for young girls. Join us on this journey as help young girls in Africa unlock their full potentials.
