  • 🎶It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas ❄️ It’s Christmas Eve and the world is slowing down to embrace the beauty of this season. ☺️ This means one thing, it’s time to relax, connect, and soak in the love around us - especially from our pets. ☺️ Here’s a little reminder for you: log off LinkedIn and go spend some quality time with your pets. We only get so many Christmases with them, and these moments will become some of your most cherished memories. Whether it’s a wagging tail, a loud purr, or just those curious eyes watching the festivities - they make the season even brighter. 🥹 If you’re looking for ideas, here are a few: 💝 Take them on a festive walk or play their favorite game. 💝 Bake them some pet-friendly treats (they’ll love you for it). 😌 💝 Wrap a little gift for them to “unwrap.” It’s simple, fun, and always brings a smile. 💝 Snap some holiday photos - it’s a keepsake you’ll treasure forever. While you’re at it, keep them safe: avoid foods like chocolate, keep decorations out of reach, and make sure they have a quiet space if things get overwhelming. 👩⚕️👨⚕️ Our office will be closed for a few days as we enjoy the season, but we’ll be back soon and can’t wait to see you and your pets in the new year. Bring them by to say hello - we’d love to hear all about your holiday adventures! 🤗 Merry Christmas, and thank you for making this year so special. 🎄🎁 From all of us at Kingston Agrovet, we love and support you always. • Is Starting a Poultry Business One of Your New Year Resolutions? As we round off 2024 and step into a new year, it's the perfect time for young people in Nigeria to set bold resolutions that can shape their futures and our nation’s economy. One such goal? Exploring opportunities in poultry farming and agribusiness. 🌴 Agriculture remains a critical pillar of Nigeria’s economy, contributing about 23% of our GDP (Statista, 2023). Within this, poultry farming plays a vital role, providing affordable protein and supporting livelihoods across the value chain - from feed production to distribution and retail. But here’s the catch: the agricultural sector needs youthful energy, innovation, and ambition to truly thrive. With over 70% of Nigeria’s population under 30, this generation holds the key to transforming agriculture into a modern, dynamic industry. Why Poultry Farming❓ Poultry farming is one of the most accessible agribusiness ventures. With minimal to average capital investment, you can start a small poultry farm, focus on egg production, or rear broilers for meat. Knowledge is the biggest asset here. We believe that understanding animal health, proper feed, and market demand can significantly reduce risks and boost profitability. What Can You Do in 2025? 🐔 Start Small, Dream Big: Begin with a small flock or even partner with friends to pool resources. 🐔 Educate Yourself: Knowledge is free online - follow reputable agricultural bodies, attend training sessions, and connect with local mentors. 🐔 Innovate: Explore ways to stand out, like using digital platforms for marketing or incorporating sustainable farming practices. 🐔 Collaborate: Partner with established organizations for guidance, training and funding opportunities. At Kingston Agrovet, we’re committed to empowering the next generation of farmers. We provide: 🐣 Access to quality veterinary products and services. 🐣 Training and guidance for beginner and commercial poultry farmers. 🐣 Affordable, practical solutions to help farmers succeed. We believe agriculture can drive job creation and community development, especially in rural areas, where poultry farming creates opportunities for feed suppliers, transporters, marketers, and more. This New Year, consider taking a step into agriculture - not just for personal success but to contribute to Nigeria’s food security and economic development. YOU can make a difference! Let’s make 2025 a year of growth for you and our nation. Are you ready to Begin?! • Today, Kingston Agrovet had the privilege of hosting the visionary CEO of Farm Alert, Dr. Femi Kayode. His visit was not only inspiring but also a testament to the incredible strides Farm Alert is making in transforming agriculture and veterinary services both nationally and globally. This visit is especially meaningful as Farm Alert recently celebrated its 5th anniversary, marking half a decade of innovation and impact in the industry. A special highlight of the day was reconnecting with Dr Stephen Okwuada, one of our esteemed veterinarians, who began his career at Farm Alert. Dr. Femi’s dedication to excellence and global impact resonates with all of us at Kingston Agrovet, and we are certain that his insights from today’s visit will help us serve our community even better. We are grateful for this opportunity to learn and are excited about the possibilities for collaboration in advancing veterinary and agricultural excellence. Thank you, Dr. Femi Kayode, for your unwavering commitment to growth, mentorship, and impact. • From Chick to Hulk: A Tale of Engineered Chickens 🐓 In a small Nigerian village, there’s a story about two farmers: One nurtured his chickens patiently, feeding them grains and allowing them to roam freely under the sun. The other chose a quicker path, using artificial feeds to fatten his birds in record time. The former saw his chickens thrive, their meat wholesome and nourishing. The latter, though his birds grew large quickly, soon discovered they were brittle and sickly. This story reflects a modern dilemma: the rise of "agric fowls" - engineered poultry reared with artificial feeds to fatten them unnaturally fast. For many Nigerians, this practice has become the norm. 🌳 The Roots of the Culture The "agric fowl" culture is a response to economic necessity. With poverty rates high and farming resources scarce, many see these birds as an affordable and efficient way to meet protein demands. Their rapid growth cycle promises quick profits for farmers and cheaper meat for consumers. However, this practice thrives in a system that rewards shortcuts over sustainability. In a third-world country like Nigeria, where agricultural infrastructure is underdeveloped, and consumers often prioritize cost over quality, "agric fowls" have become a staple in homes, and markets. 🚫 Why It’s a Problem 1. Health Concerns: Artificial feeds used to accelerate growth are often laced with hormones and chemicals that can have long-term health effects on consumers. Studies link these feeds to hormonal imbalances and increased risks of diseases like cancer. 2. The Chickens’ Welfare: These birds suffer immensely. Their accelerated growth leads to weak bones, heart strain, and an inability to move freely, raising ethical concerns. 3. Nutritional Deficits: Compared to free-range chickens, agric fowls are less flavorful and nutritionally inferior, offering lower protein levels and higher fat content. 👀 How to Identify and Avoid Agric Fowls 1️⃣ Size vs. Age: If a chicken looks unusually large for its age, it’s likely an agric fowl. 2️⃣ Texture: Their meat is often less firm and sometimes watery when cooked. 3️⃣ Price: If the price seems too good to be true, it might reflect lower-quality farming practices. Opt for free-range or traditionally-reared chickens from trusted sources. Look for local farmers or suppliers who prioritize natural feeds and ethical practices. 🔀 Encouraging Change Ending this growing culture requires collective action. There's a need to educate consumers on the health and ethical implications, support local farmers and advocate for stricter policies. 🇳🇬 As Nigerians, we take pride in the richness of our culture and the wholesomeness of our traditions. Let’s not let shortcuts erode the integrity of what we consume. By choosing quality over quantity, we honor both our health and the environment. What are your thoughts on this growing trend? Let us know ☺️

  • CLASH OF THE SEASON: HARMATTAN FC vs. TEAM POULTRY - WHO WINS? As harmattan sets in across Northern Nigeria, poultry farmers are faced with the challenges of cold temperatures, dusty winds, and their impact on bird health and productivity. At Kingston Agrovet, located in Abuja, we understand the unique needs of farmers during this season. Our commitment is to provide professional support and veterinary care to help you keep your birds healthy, thriving, and profitable. Harmattan is a critical period for poultry farming due to: 🟢 Increased risk of respiratory diseases (e.g., Newcastle Disease, Chronic Respiratory Disease). 🟢 Stress-induced health issues, reducing immunity and productivity. 🟢 Temperature-sensitive conditions like frostbite, affecting birds' overall well-being. As your trusted veterinary partner, we recommend the following steps to protect your flock: 🐥Temperature Control: Provide adequate heat using gas heaters, kerosene lamps, or electric brooders for younger birds. Seal poultry houses with curtains or tarpaulins to block cold winds while maintaining proper ventilation. 🐤 Enhanced Nutrition: Feed your birds energy-dense diets to help them generate heat. Incorporate supplements like vitamins, minerals, and immune boosters to strengthen resistance against illnesses. 🐥 Vaccination and Medical Care: Ensure your birds are vaccinated against Newcastle Disease and other seasonal illnesses. Schedule health checks with a trusted professional to identify and address any signs of stress or disease early. 🐤 Hygiene and Water: Keep your poultry house clean and free of dust to minimize respiratory issues. Provide lukewarm water to keep birds hydrated and reduce cold stress. 🐓 Online Support for Farmers To serve our community better, Kingston Agrovet offers an online platform on WhatsApp where farmers can receive veterinary advice, ask questions, and schedule consultations. Whether they're managing a small backyard operation or a large-scale farm, we’re here to help. Together, we can ensure your birds stay healthy, grow optimally, and thrive this harmattan season. Visit us in Abuja or reach out via our online platform for tailored veterinary support. • PETS, STRAYS, AND LOVE: BUILDING A CULTURE OF COMPASSION In many Nigerian households, pets are often seen as tools - guarding homes, chasing off rodents, or fulfilling other functional roles. More recently, some are kept for aesthetic reasons or as trendy additions. But pets are more than their roles or appearances. They are living beings who deserve proper care, respect, and love. At Kingston Agrovet, we believe it’s time to nurture a better pet culture in Nigeria. As veterinarians and animal lovers, we encourage pet owners to prioritize: 🟢 Healthy Feeding: Avoid harmful leftovers; choose safe, nutritious food options. 🟢 Preventive Care: Vaccinate, deworm, and seek regular check-ups for your pets. 🟢 Daily Attention: Ensure clean spaces, fresh water, and opportunities for play and exercise. 🟢 Safe Environments: Protect them from hazards and keep them in secure, loving homes. Pet care doesn’t have to be expensive; it just needs to be intentional. This Christmas, let’s extend our empathy not just to humans but to animals too. Do something special for your pets - buy a toy, treat them to a grooming session, or simply spend more quality time with them. 🔴 We’re also open to partnering with individuals and organizations to do something nice for the strays in our communities this season. Together, we can create a kinder, more empathetic society for all animals. • THE POWER OF CUSTOMER SERVICE IN "UNCONVENTIONAL" FIELDS: A VETERINARIAN'S SECRET TO GAINING AND RETAINING HAPPY CLIENTS It’s Monday, thus a great time to reflect on one of our core values at Kingston Agrovet- customer service. 👨💼👩💼 As a growing player in the veterinary field, Kingston Agrovet is focused on making a meaningful impact in both our profession and community. Our commitment to exceptional customer service is central to this mission, and we owe much of this mindset to the guidance and example set by our mentors and those who have paved the way in the veterinary profession. 👨⚕️👩⚕️ Thus, one of our most essential roles is the Customer Support Officer, who ensures that client needs are prioritized. You might wonder, "Why is customer service so important in a vet clinic or pet store?" After all, our primary focus is the health and well-being of pets, aquatic life, and farm animals. But here’s the thing: customer service in veterinary care is just as crucial as it is in banking, hospitality, or any other industry. From the first interaction, we ensure that our clients, both pets and their human caretakers, feel valued. Trust is essential.👫👬 Clients need to believe in our capabilities as veterinarians, nurses, and technicians to resolve their concerns, whether at home or on the farm. By following a structured customer service approach, we build trust, reliability, and long-term relationships. Here's the secret: Our clients trust us to deliver the care their animals need, and we’re committed to meeting that trust with professionalism and compassion. Our team is trained to extend warmth, not just to the animals we treat but also to their caretakers. We believe everyone deserves personalized, intentional care when they walk through our doors. For us, every week is Customer Service Week. As we step into December, we’re energized and ready to serve with renewed passion, putting customer service at the heart of everything we do. To incorporate customer service in veterinary care, here are some of the tips we use: 1️⃣ We intentionally create personalized experiences for every client - human or animal. 2️⃣ Clear communication: we use simple, empathetic language to explain diagnoses, treatment options, and aftercare. 3️⃣ Follow-Up care: we check in regularly with clients to demonstrate genuine concern and reinforce trust. 4️⃣ Education and Engagement: we share practical, relatable knowledge that helps clients care for their animals more effectively. 5️⃣ Continuous Training: we constantly equip our team with customer service skills tailored to the emotional and practical needs of veterinary clients. What would you add to this list? How do you ensure exceptional customer service on your end? #kingstonagrovet #veterinarymedicine #customerservice #customerappreciation #vetclinic Dr Stephen Okwuada

  • 6 GAME CHANGING TIPS ON MAXIMIZING EGG PRODUCTION AND LAYER MANAGEMENT A Veterinarians Note to Poultry Farmers ✍️ As a veterinarian with over six years of experience in poultry farming, I’ve seen one simple truth: successful egg production hinges on proper layer management. A few key practices can make all the difference between average and exceptional results. 1️⃣ Early Care Matters Strong layers start as healthy chicks. Proper brooding with steady temperatures (32-35°C in the first week) and a solid vaccination plan ensures a productive future. Don’t cut corners on nutrition; a good diet supports rapid growth and bone development. 2️⃣ Nutrition Is Everything Layers need more than just feed; they need the right balance. Calcium (3.5-4%) strengthens shells, while protein (16-18%) fuels production. Timely transitions to layer feed around 18 weeks are essential to avoid dips in output. 3️⃣ Light Drives Laying Consistent light exposure (14-16 hours daily) is crucial for steady production. Sudden changes disrupt cycles, leading to stress and lower egg counts. Gradual lighting adjustments help maintain optimal performance. 4️⃣ Disease Prevention Saves Flocks Prevention is cheaper than treatment. Biosecurity, regular health checks, and quick responses to warning signs, like pale combs or reduced feed intake keep flocks healthy and productive. 5️⃣ Stress-Free Environment Comfortable layers are productive layers. Proper ventilation, ample space (at least 2 sq. ft. per bird), and stable temperatures (18-24°C) reduce stress and boost output. 6️⃣ Egg Handling Protects Quality Frequent collection and clean nesting areas prevent breakage and contamination. Eggs should be stored at 10-13°C to maintain freshness and minimize microbial risks. Always remember that maximizing egg production isn’t about drastic changes; it’s about consistent, well-rounded care. Small improvements today can lead to big gains tomorrow. 🐣🐔 Let’s keep sharing knowledge and growing the industry together, one egg at a time.🥚🐣 What are your thoughts? Let’s discuss in the comments! Veterinarian at Kingston Agrovet Ltd | Entrepreneur | Poultry and Livestock Expert | Advocate for Quality Customer service.

As we come to a close on the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) 2024, I am particularly filled with fulfillment and excitement as I joined my colleague and One Health Advocate, Dr Bolanle Akanbi-Hakeem on the streets of Lugbe, a fast developing community in Abuja, FCT, Nigeria. With support from the One Health in Action Initiative we organized a physical outreach centered around the theme; 'Educate, Advocate and Act Now' We first of all hit the markets and had a one-on-one time with the traders on AMR and it's one health implications. We also extended visits to Vet clinics and Pharmacies in the neighborhood interacting with the customers we met there and also the staff. As we close this year's WAAW, I want to plea to all of us to ensure the momentum does not stop here. The fight against AMR is a collaborative effort that requires consistency. I want to further state, I am open to partnerships and collaborations towards this cause and the likes. Let's keep the energy high. #Antimicrobialresistance #Waaw2024 #Educate #Advocate #Act_now
