Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh was a Nigerian doctor who saved the country from a deadly Ebola outbreak in 2014. As the Lead Physician at a private hospital in Lagos, she diagnosed Nigeria’s first Ebola case, even though she had never seen the disease before. When Liberian officials pressured her to release the patient, she refused, saying it was "for the greater public good." Her bravery helped stop the virus from spreading in Nigeria, a country of over 190 million people. Sadly, she and three of her colleagues lost their lives after contracting the virus. Because of her quick thinking and courage, Nigeria contained the outbreak, unlike other affected countries. On October 20, 2014, the World Health Organization declared Nigeria Ebola-free. In the 1940s and 50s, she stood against colonialism and gender inequality, founding the Market Women Association in Aba to unite and empower women. Her leadership led to the creation of the Aba Township Women’s Association, which helped women gain political influence. By 1955, women outnumbered men in Aba’s elections, and in 1961, she became a legislator, championing women's economic and political rights.
