About us
Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL) is the concessionaire of Kainji and Jebba Hydro Power Plants (HPP) with an installed capacity of 760MW and 578.4MW respectively and a total installed capacity of 1338.4MW. The two hydro plants are 100km apart with Kainji dam being on the upstream of Jebba both drawing water from the same source, Niger River. Upon takeover in November 2013, the total available capacity of the two plants was 582MW. As of today, MESL has proudly restored capacity of up to 922MW over the course of three years. We generate on average 20 percent of Nigeria’s power. Kainji was commissioned as Nigeria’s first Hydro Power Plant in 1968. Located downstream from Kainji is the Jebba Power Plant which was commissioned in 1985. The turbines in the Power Plants are Kaplan adjustable and fixed blade types. MESL is a privately-owned company being governed by a Board of Directors and Executive Management that oversee the day to day operations of the plants.

Throwback to our medical outreach in Kontagora carried out in November! We still feel the impact of the two-day life-changing event where our doctors screened over 516 individuals for various eye-related ailments. The team performed 106 surgeries and distributed 400+ eyeglasses while our partner Raise Foundation collaborated with us to bring healthcare to those who need it most as they screened for cervical cancer. As the year 2024 slides to an end, we are glad to inform you that since assuming control of the 760MW Kainji hydropower plant, MESL has implemented a comprehensive expansion plan, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to enhance operational efficiency and increase power generation capacity. Notably, the ongoing installation of draft tube elbows for generating units 1G3 and 1G4, with a combined capacity of 220MW, is critical to this expansion endeavours. Specifically, unit 1G4 is being installed within the spiral casing, while unit 1G3 is currently at the starting stage of installation. With a planned completion date of 2026, we are committed to delivering this project on schedule, while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and environmental sustainability.
