Cervical Cancer is Preventable—Education is Key! That’s why we took awareness to the next generation! At JSS Garki, we engaged about 100 students in a fun and educational session on cervical cancer prevention, early detection, and healthy choices. Key Lessons from Dr. Rukkayya’s Talk: ✅ What is cervical cancer? Understanding how it affects women. ✅ The HPV connection: A virus (HPV) can cause cervical cancer—but it’s preventable! ✅ Prevention is power! The HPV vaccine 💉 is a game-changer. ✅ Busting myths! Cervical cancer is NOT contagious and is NOT a death sentence. ✅ Becoming a health advocate: Students were encouraged to share what they learned with their families. Interactive Q&A Fun! The students asked brilliant questions like: ❓ “Can boys get HPV too?” ❓ “How can we help our families learn about this?” Winners got cool prizes for their participation! The Impact: The students left inspired and informed, eager to spread awareness within their families. In Cairo, Egypt, I had the privilege of participating in a two-day meeting on advancing equity and innovation in women’s cancer care at the invitation of the Presidential Initiative for Women’s Health, in collaboration with WHO EMRO, World Health Organization Egypt, and other global cancer organizations. As Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) President-Elect and a global cancer advocate, it was an honor to engage in discussions on breast cancer care and share UICC-related programs. I also joined a high-level panel on lung cancer, reinforcing the UICC’s goal to reduce the global burden by harnessing its strength of 1,100 member organizations, and 50 partners, across 72 countries. Progress comes only by translating global initiatives such as the GBCI into country-level action. Alongside the main conference, I was able to engage several groups in partnerships. These include Ahmad Morsy, Nigeria-Egypt Chamber of Commerce, as well as Prof. Gevorg Tamamyan, head of OncoDaily group. Powered by incredible political will, Egypt’s breast cancer program(under the leadership of Prof Hesham ElGhazaly and the Ministry of Health and Population), has made remarkable strides in early detection, diagnosis, and integrated care for women’s cancers. Since 2019, 56 million women have been screened, with 770,905 receiving examinations in the hospital, 410,194 total radiology examinations, 46,989 pathological tests and about 55,000 have received free treatment. Its alignment with the WHO Global Breast Cancer Initiative Framework positions it as a model of success that should inspire similar programs globally. A key outcome of this dialogue was the “Cairo Call to Action for Breast Cancer,” highlighting commitments to expand access to life-saving services for vulnerable populations. Together with high-level health authorities, WHO leadership, Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), IARC - International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization, American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) etc, we aim to ensure that no woman is left behind in the fight against breast cancer. This collaboration highlights the power of regional and global partnerships to transform cancer care and control. Yesterday, February 11th 2025, World Health Organization executive board adopted a resolution sponsored by Nigeria, South Africa and 58 co sponsors, to officially recognize November 17th as the cervical cancer elimination day of action. It was therefore a significant outing for us MEDICAID CANCER FOUNDATION to attend the Abuja screening of “What I Do Not Know Will Not Kill Me”, at Institut Français du Nigeria. The powerful social impact documentary on cervical cancer realities, also offers hope for patients who access early detection and quality healthcare. Central to the story is Dr Aisha Mustapha a gynecologic oncologist and cervical cancer survivor, whose journey as both a patient and lifesaver highlighted the importance of awareness, screening, vaccination, and access to treatment. The documentary exposed some challenges within Nigeria’s healthcare system as well as the financial burden on women. Filmmaker Annabelle Ayangbade sends a reminder that knowledge and advocacy are key in the fight against cancer. In January, the first MEDICAID CANCER FOUNDATION outreach of 2025 took us to STEM Child Care Academy, Abuja, where we held honest, engaging conversations with young girls and their teachers about cervical cancer awareness, lifestyle choices like diet, HPV education, and the importance of the HPV vaccine. It was encouraging to see the young girls ask questions to help them understand cancer better. My team and I are committed to building a future where no woman has to suffer from cervical cancer.
