Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI)
Mental Health Care
Largest User/Youth led Mental Health Network in West Africa
About us
Mentally Aware Nigeria is founded on two core beliefs: first, that all possible steps should be taken to alleviate stigma and the suffering arising from it, caused by ignorance and an unbelievable silence and negligence towards the health of the mind, from federal setups down to the locales; and second, that it becomes known that those affected by this disaster (as depicted in the first point), have a right to life with dignity and therefore a right to assistance. We are driven by our commitment to promote mental health as a critical part of overall wellness, including early identification and intervention for those at risk, integrated health, behavioral health and other services for those who need them, and recovery as a goal. Our objectives are therefore built on the factors we believe that with proper enforcement, will affect the Nigerian and African mental health system positively, in the immediate future and most importantly, in the long run.

Last month, October 2024, we witnessed pure debate magic! To commemorate World Mental Health Day 2024, the Student Advocacy Network (STAN) in the University of Lagos(UNILAG) and Federal Univesity of Technology, Owerri(FUTO) hosted an epic school debate in both Lagos and Imo State, with 8 schools going head-to-head on a powerful topic: “Addressing Workplace Mental Health is More Important than Increasing Salary.” The energy the student brought? Unmatched. The insights? Eye-opening👏🏽. These young minds didn’t just bring their A-game; they redefined it. The passion, knowledge, and mental health awareness they shared were incredible to watch and even better to learn from! A big shoutout to UNILAG and FUTO STAN and all our phenomenal student debaters! Together, we are building a future that prioritizes mental health in the workplace. #MentalHealthMatters #WorldMentalHealthDay2024 #STANDebate

While we strive to be the best in our fields, let’s ensure to take good care of our mental health, take breaks, journal, take a walk, and sleep. Join the conversation! Having conversations around suicide can be difficult, which is why STAN members will be making video series to share tips on how to navigate these conversations #ChangeTheNarrative #SuicidePrevention #EndTheStigma
