About us
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) was established by Decree No. 15 of 1993 as amended by Decree No. 19 of 1999 and now the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control Act Cap N1 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2004. The act mandates the Agency to regulate and control the manufacture, importation, exportation, distribution, advertisement, sale and use of Food, Drugs, Cosmetics, Medical Devices, Packaged Water, Chemicals and Detergents (collectively known as regulated products). The Agency was officially established in October 1992.

This year’s theme, Educate, Advocate, Act Now, emphasises the urgent need for coordinated action to combat Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), described as a "silent pandemic." The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye highlighted the Agency’s initiatives to address AMR, including banning antibiotics as growth promoters in livestock production and restricting colistin use in animal feed. She also underscored the importance of collaboration with local and international partners, as well as public education campaigns to promote prudent antimicrobial use across human, animal, and environmental sectors. As global leaders commit to reducing AMR-related deaths and ensuring sustainable antimicrobial practices, NAFDAC reaffirms its dedication to safeguarding public health. At the 19th International Conference of Drug Regulatory Authorities #ICDRA in New Delhi, India, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of NAFDAC, virtually delivered two key presentations on Nigeria's advancement in regulating paediatric medicinal products and NAFDAC's regulatory preparedness during the COVID-19 pandemic. In her first presentation, Prof. Adeyeye highlighted NAFDAC's active involvement in the WHO Paediatric Regulatory Network and introduced Nigeria’s newly developed Paediatric Medicinal Products Regulations 2024. These pending regulations set strict guidelines for product registration, labelling, packaging, and pharmacovigilance, aiming to ensure the safety and quality of paediatric medicines in Nigeria. Her second presentation focused on NAFDAC’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasising the Agency's adaptive measures, such as virtual operations and regulatory innovations. Prof. Adeyeye also discussed the importance of local vaccine production and NAFDAC's efforts to strengthen clinical trials and post-marketing surveillance. These experiences are reshaping Nigeria’s regulatory landscape, positioning the country to better respond to future health crises.

Huge congratulations to Director General Prof Moji Adeyeye for her exemplary leadership in convening National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)’s 2nd Regional Workshop on Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and Excipients in #Nigeria, under the President’s Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain initiative. USAID's PQM+ program was proud to support this event designed to build the capacity of regulators and local manufacturers on API governance and improve access to safe, effective, and affordable medicines in the region. During the opening ceremony, PQM+ Program Director, Jude Nwokike emphasized the importance of investments into regulatory bodies and industry reforms, stating, “There is no government that has transformed the pharmaceutical industry without huge investments into its industry, regulatory body and reforms.” #HealthSystems
