I had the pleasure of spending the past week in Riyadh at the 24 Fintech Summit alongside three incredible startups from Northern Nigeria: Sudo Africa, Interface Africa (a TT labs portfolio company), and Fagopay from the Northern Founders Community. We were warmly welcomed by Mohammed Al Qahtani , the chief host, and Mohammed ElKuwaiz Chairman of the Capital Market Authority. This summit presented an exceptional opportunity for these startups to forge meaningful partnerships and explore potential expansion into the Middle East. Personally, I’m excited about the growing ties between the Middle East and Africa, both in terms of investment and market expansion. It was also a great chance to connect with fellow VCs in the ecosystem, explore co-investment opportunities, and exchange valuable insights about the African and Middle Eastern markets. Northino Learning is an inclusive e-learning platform that provides localized digital skills courses empowering millions of African native speakers with digital skills and enabling them to contribute to the global workforce. Abubakar Almuhandis the founder of Northino, has successfully led his startup to the finals of the iHatch startup incubation program—a 5-month intensive initiative designed to help Nigerian entrepreneurs refine their business ideas through coaching, lectures, and boot camps, ultimately creating viable and scalable business models. The 3rd cohort of the iHatch program began in December 2023, with over 11,000 proposals submitted. From this competitive pool, only 40 startups made the cut, with Northino and Zainnest being 2 of the 8 startups selected from the Northwest Kano zone.
