#Daily #Patient #Insight HMPV You may have recently heard about the human metanemovirus, which has begun to attract attention as one of the common respiratory viruses, and certainly the most important thing that comes to your mind is how to treat and prevent this virus! ☑ How is human metanemovirus (HMPV) treated? Most people can manage symptoms at home until they feel better, but if adults or children become severely ill, they must go to the hospital, and there the treatment is provided as follows: - Oxygen therapy: In case of difficulty breathing, the doctor gives oxygen through a tube in the nose or through a mask on the face. - Intravenous fluids: Fluids delivered directly into the vein can keep the body hydrated. - Medications to reduce inflammation and relieve some symptoms. ☑ Do you need #antibiotics to treat human metanemovirus? Antibiotics are not used to treat viruses, but only to treat bacterial infections, but; Sometimes a person gets a secondary bacterial infection at the same time as the human metanemovirus, so the doctor prescribes antibiotics in that case. ☑Can you prevent infection with human metanemovirus? You can reduce your risk of infection by following these tips: -Wash your hands often with soap and water, and if you can't use soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. -Cover your nose and mouth with your elbow, not your bare hand, when you sneeze or cough. -Avoid being around other people when you or they are sick with a cold or other infectious disease. -Consider wearing a face mask if you are sick and can't avoid being around others. -Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose, and mouth. -Do not share food or eating utensils (forks, spoons, cups) with others. Do you think that raising awareness about respiratory viruses can help reduce their spread? ©️PharmahubNG

Daily #Patient #Insight Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is a medication primarily used to treat: Indications 1. *Hypertension*: HCTZ is used to lower blood pressure in people with hypertension. 2. *Edema*: HCTZ is used to treat edema (swelling) caused by various conditions, such as heart failure, liver disease, and kidney disease. 3. *Nephrolithiasis*: HCTZ is used to prevent kidney stones by increasing the excretion of calcium in the urine. Mechanism of Action HCTZ is a thiazide diuretic that works by: 1. *Inhibiting sodium reabsorption*: HCTZ blocks the reabsorption of sodium ions in the distal convoluted tubule of the kidneys. 2. *Increasing urine production*: By inhibiting sodium reabsorption, HCTZ increases the amount of sodium and water excreted in the urine. 3. *Reducing blood volume*: The increased urine production leads to a decrease in blood volume, which helps to lower blood pressure. Side Effects Common side effects of HCTZ include: 1. *Increased urination* 2. *Dry mouth* 3. *Fatigue* 4. *Dizziness* 5. *Headache* 6. *Stomach upset* 7. *Electrolyte imbalance* (e.g., low potassium levels) Contraindications HCTZ is contraindicated in: 1. *Severe kidney disease* 2. *Severe liver disease* 3. *Anuria* ( inability to produce urine) 4. *Hypersensitivity* to sulfonamides or thiazides Interactions HCTZ can interact with: 1. *Lithium*: Increased risk of lithium toxicity 2. *Digoxin*: Increased risk of digoxin toxicity 3. *Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)*: Reduced effectiveness of HCTZ 4. *Potassium-sparing diuretics*: Increased risk of hyperkalemia (high potassium levels) www.pharmahub.com.ng ©️PharmahubNG

Daily #MedInfo ⚠️Cisapride 1. Mechanism of Action: • Selective 5-HT4 receptor agonist. • Increases the release of acetylcholine in the enteric nervous system, promoting prokinetic effects (enhancing gastrointestinal motility). 2. Uses: • Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). • Used in gastroparesis (delayed gastric emptying). • May be used for constipation-related disorders. 3. Side Effects: • Cardiac arrhythmias (due to QT interval prolongation). • Diarrhea and abdominal cramping. • Headache and dizziness. 4. Withdrawal: • Cisapride has been withdrawn in many countries due to its cardiac side effects, but still used in certain regions under strict regulation. Summary: Cisapride is a prokinetic drug acting on 5-HT4 receptors to improve gastrointestinal motility. However, its use is limited due to potential serious cardiac side effects, particularly QT prolongation, requiring careful monitoring and cautious prescribing. https://lnkd.in/gC6HnWPb ©️PharmahubNG

Global #Health Update as of today! HMPV: China is currently experiencing an increase in respiratory infections, notably human metapneumovirus (HMPV), particularly among children under 14 in northern provinces. HMPV typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms, including cough, fever, nasal congestion, headache, and fatigue. However, it can lead to more severe conditions such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia, especially in young children and individuals with weakened immune systems. In response to this rise, China's National Disease Control and Prevention Administration is piloting a monitoring system for pneumonia of unknown origin. This initiative aims to enhance preparedness for handling unknown pathogens, drawing lessons from the initial lack of readiness during the COVID-19 outbreak. The administration is establishing procedures for laboratories to report cases and for disease control agencies to verify and manage them. Despite circulating reports and social media speculation suggesting a large-scale outbreak, Chinese authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO) have not indicated any unusual or novel pathogens. They note that respiratory infections often increase during winter months. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that the diseases appear to be less severe and spreading on a smaller scale compared to the previous year. She assured that the Chinese government is attentive to the health of both its citizens and foreigners in China, emphasizing that it is safe to travel in the country. It's important to note that there is currently no vaccine for HMPV. Symptoms are generally similar to those of a common cold, and treatment focuses on relieving symptoms. Health experts advise against the improper use of antiviral drugs for HMPV. As the situation develops, it's advisable to stay informed through official health channels and adhere to recommended health precautions, especially during the winter season when respiratory illnesses are more prevalent. https://lnkd.in/gQE-4a5j
