The kitchen plays a significant role in environmental degradation, accounting for over 25% of global carbon emissions, while a staggering 85% of ocean debris originates from kitchen or food-related activities. The negative health implications of kitchen carbon emissions on women's health are also a pressing concern that cannot be overstated. Food production, processing, and distribution are substantial contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for somewhere between 25% and 33% of the planet's total emissions. Moreover, approximately 85% of waste found on the high seas originates from kitchens, underscoring the significant impact of food waste and packaging on marine pollution. The majority of kitchen waste contributing to marine debris consists of food packaging, disposable utensils and dishware, cleaning supplies, and food waste itself. Food packaging alone accounts for around 40% of kitchen waste, while food waste makes up approximately 30%. However, our recent survey in urban areas such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt revealed a surprising misconception. Less than four out of ten people understood clean cooking to be solely about preparing healthy meals, rather than recognizing its broader environmental benefits. The situation is even more challenging in rural areas, where the concept of clean cooking is often met with confusion and unfamiliarity. This highlights a significant knowledge gap and the need for education and inspiration to promote a deeper understanding of clean cooking and its advantages. To address this, it's essential to launch initiatives that educate and inspire people about the benefits of clean cooking.
