It is official! The inaugural international Africa Primary Health Care Forum (APHCF) will hold 8th-9th of July in Abuja, Nigeria. THEME: Reimagining Primary Health Care for Universal Health Coverage and Health Security in Africa SUB-THEMES: 1.     Learning from the Past, Building for the Future: Integrating lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic to strengthen community-centered primary health care systems, enhance resilience, and address misinformation. 2.     Empowering the Frontline Workforce: Addressing health workforce shortages through targeted development, leveraging digital technology, and enhancing capacity to meet future public health demands. 3.     Innovative Partnerships for a Stronger PHC Ecosystem: Strengthening multi-sectoral collaborations, fostering private sector innovations, and exploring digital and infrastructural solutions to advance universal health coverage and health security. The West African Institute of Public Health in collaboration with continental bodies , Governments and Partners will host this major convening. Watch out for more information over the next few days! I am delighted to share that I have been inducted as a Member of The Academy of Public Health (APH) during the International Health Ministerial Summit, 04-05 December 2024 in Kigali, Rwanda. The APH was established as a special purpose vehicle of the West African Institute of Public Health (WAIPH) and is dedicated to enhancing public health practice across the region. This initiative brings together an exceptional calibre of public health professionals with varied skillsets to ideate and collaborate with one another. I am particularly looking forward to collaborating with folks who are committed to the end-to-end local manufacturing agenda on the continent. FLASHBACK FRIDAY!!!😊 Few weeks ago, I had the honor of attending the induction ceremony for new members of The Academy of Public Health (The APH) ⚕️ It was wonderful reconnecting with DEAL fellows, Immaculata Chigozie Amadi Emmanuel Nwanya while engaging in impactful discussions on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). The theme for the day was "Combating Antimicrobial Resistance: Empowering a Resilient Public Health Response." This theme is especially timely as we are currently in World AMR Awareness Week, celebrated annually from November 18th to 24th. This is a friendly reminder to join the fight against AMR by practicing proper hygiene, using antibiotics only when necessary, and keeping up with routine vaccinations. . #globalhealth #SDG3 #AMRawareness

Magda Robalo is the President and co-founder of The Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD). She is a public health physician with a career of over 30 years in the global health ecosystem. A former minister of health of Guinea-Bissau, she led the COVID-19 response in Guinea-Bissau as the High Commissioner of the Presidential Task Force. Dr Robalo is co-chair of the UHC2030 - Taking action for universal health coverage Steering Committee. She is a Global Ambassador of the G20 & G7 Health and Development Partnership, Vice chair of the Ethics and Governance Committee of the The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and The Lancet Group Commissioner for People-Centered Care for Universal Health Coverage. Prior to these roles, Dr Robalo was Director of Communicable Diseases, World Health Organization, Representative to Namibia and Ghana, among other senior positions with the World Health Organization Africa Region. A leading voice for gender equality, she stands for equitable access to quality health care for all and social justice. Throughout her career, she led transformative actions to improve health outcomes, establish inclusive and accountable governance systems and empower women and girls. Congratulations, Emmanuel Alhassan , FAPH! We are thrilled to celebrate our Fellow of The Academy of Public Health and Adjunct Faculty of West African Institute of Public Health, Dr Emmanuel Onu Alhassan on his well-deserved appointment as Professor of Psychology at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, effective October 1, 2023. His remarkable achievements, including being the first PhD holder in #Psychometrics in Nigeria, demonstrates his commitment to academic excellence. His distinguished career, marked by pioneering leadership roles at the National Agency for the Control of AIDS and contributions to public health policy, has significantly impacted the fight against HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. Beyond being a member of our Fellows' Roll, he has been a Harvard University's Senior Executive Fellow, as well as a Fellow of many other professional bodies, which are testament to his multidisciplinary expertise and dedication which have earned him such esteemed recognition. We acknowledge his tireless advocacy for sustainable health financing across the region.
